BMW I Vision Introduces Amby - All About Functionality, Satisfaction And Future.
BMW i Vision presents the Amby, or “adaptive mobility”, as an effort to take the concept of the electric bicycle (e-bike) into a high tech future.
From the outside, it may look like a standard e-bike, but the BMW i Vision AMBY promises more possibilities and absolute satisfaction.
This high-speed pedelec is designed for the urbanist to satisfy their mobility needs around the town.
It comes equipped with a pedal-powered two-wheeler with drive supplemented by an electric motor fed by a 2,000 Wh battery. According to BMW, recharge time takes three hours, and a full charge allows Amby to travel a claimed 300 km at a maximum of 25 km/h.
However, no zero-effort movement is available as power from the motor only comes in when the rider starts cycling. No button or throttle is available to assist. Drive to the 27.5-inch rear wheel uses a toothed belt for low maintenance, and the wheel itself is mounted on a single-sided swingarm in a design taken from BMW’s Motorrad division.
As for riding modes, there are three options available; mode 1 governs the Amby to 25 km/h giving 300 km speed, mode 2 allows up to 45 km/h with 180km speed meanwhile mode 3, or Vmodmax, goes to a governed top speed of 60 km/h and 75km speed.
The most exciting and high-tech part is that BMW will foresee user restrictions like license classes and insurance regulations coming into force for e-bikes once the rider’s smartphone is connected to the Amby. An app will store such information and connect to the Amby, indicating what speeds the user is restricted to depending on the license.
In addition, the Amby geofencing technology will limit its movement to specific areas and restrict travel speed based on regulatory limits. Also, the app uses facial recognition as a digital key to permit access to the Amby.
The Amby is also built with an adjustable seat post. Riders can set their preferred height on the digital key, and Amby will take care of the rest. Amby also automatically sets the seat height after the user enters biometric data such as height and inside leg measurement.
