274 Electric Vehicles Sold in 2021! More To Come in 2022?

During a virtual press conference earlier, Malaysia Automotive Association (MAA) president Datuk Aishah has stated a total of 508, 911 vehicles were sold in 2021. In comparison to 2020’s sales, the number is down by 4 percent, which is 20,603 units less resulting in 529, 514 vehicles sold.

With the new total sales of 508, 911 in 2021, it beats MAA’s forecast that announced July last year that only 500,000 targeted to be sold.

MAA also clarified the total industry volume (TIV) figures are expected to increase by 600,000 units this year and 645,000 units in 2023.

“The extension of the sales tax exemption incentive under PEMERKASA+ package till 31 December 2021, had also helped to sustain the demand for new passenger vehicles”, added Datuk Aishah Ahmad.

Then, the government also agreed to exempt sales tax up to 100 percent for completely knocked down (CKD) passenger vehicles and 50 percent on completely built up (CBU) passenger vehicles.

“Therefore, the government has introduced import duty and excise duty exemption for EVs to attract more EV market participants to invest in Malaysia.

“This incentive encourages global and local participants to inject investment in Malaysia. MAA also expects more EVs to be produced in Malaysia, " she said.

Additionally, 274 units of EV were sold in Malaysia last year.
