The fully electric Volvo EX90 is set to be revealed on November 9 as the first to be hardware-ready for bi-directional charging capabilities.

Paired with smart-charging capabilities via Volvo Cars smartphone app, the Volvo EX90 allows drivers to charge their car when demand from the grid and prices are low which simply means more renewable sources in the energy mix that helps to save that stored energy and be use later.

“You could use its battery in many ways, from topping up your electric bike when you’re out and about, to hooking up an outdoor cooking appliance for your weekend camping trip’’ claims Head of Electrification Ecosystem Olivier Loedel.

More interestingly, the new charging approach allows drivers to assist other compatible Volvos by giving some of its charge.

Through Volvo Cars app, the entire charging process can be automatic and managed entirely by the smart charging functionality on top of having the underlying algorithm ensures the charge and discharge flow of the battery in a limited way could decrease the risk of avoidable battery degradation.

The bi-directional charging benefitted drivers to power not only their home but also other electronic devices. Thus, the company intends to sell the new charging hardware required to begin using the latest hardware charging features that includes an advanced wall box and a home energy management system.

Although the Bi-directional charging feature only available in selected markets at first, shows a strong potential to make energy consumption more affordable, efficient, and sustainable.
