New sixth-gen Subaru Impreza bows

Japanese automaker Subaru has finally taken the wraps off of its highly anticipated and new sixth-generation Impreza model this week at the on-going LA Auto Show. Unlike past iterations, this new generation Impreza will come solely as a five-door hatchback as the automaker appears to have dropped its traditional saloon body form.
Two variants were presented on stage at the LA Auto Show, those being the base 2.0-litre variants plus a new range-topping 2.5 RS variant too – the latter marking the two-lettered sporty nameplate’s return to the Impreza line as well.

Based on the latest version of the Subaru Global Platform architecture, the new Impreza has been given a new and more dynamically focused design compared to its predecessors. Crucially, the new platform also promises up to 10% in weight reduction plus “improved dynamic performance, smoother ride, and quieter cabin,” according to Subaru.
Besides that, all versions of the new sixth-gen Impreza adopt the dual-pinion electronic power steering rack system derived from the fifth-gen WRX. This, according to Subaru, promises a more direct and natural steering feel and greater responsiveness.

Retained are the signature Subaru horizontally-opposed ‘Boxer’ flat 4-cyl powerplants, with the base models harnessing the 2.0-litre version of which that outputs 152 HP and about 197 NM. The hotter RS variant benefits with a larger 2.5-litre version of said mill instead, which delivers peppier figures of 182 HP and 241 NM instead.
Apart from losing its sedan form, the new Impreza also sees Subaru dropping a manual transmission option entirely as well – even in the ‘sporty’ new RS. All versions come equipped with the brand’s signature Lineartronic CVT plus Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive driveline setups exclusively, whilst the RS variant gets bolstered with steering-mounted paddle-shifters as well.

Aptly, it’s safe to say that the exterior styling is more of an evolution of the outgoing fifth-gen Impreza’s looks. Noticeable changes include the larger front grille and the sharpened shape of the headlights. The revisions at the rear are more prominent as it now boasts fork-shaped taillights plus exposed exhaust pipes.

On board, the changes in the cabin are much more visible as this new 6th-gen model adopts a new portrait-oriented 11.6-inch infotainment touchscreen unit primed with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Other notable new features include new and more supportive front seats with new rear seats offering 60:40 split folding, plus an enhanced automatic climate control suite too.
In the hotter RS, it stands out thanks to bespoke RS badging, grey 18-inch alloy wheels, sporty black trim elements, plus all-LED forward lighting. On board, it gets carbon-effect accents, red seat bolsters and aluminium pedals. It also benefits with a host of premium kit added too such as keyless entry and ignition, blind spot detection, rear cross traffic alert, as well as selectable driving modes tuned for both performance and fuel economy.

Lastly, in terms of safety, an improved version of Subaru’s EyeSight driver assistance tech comes standard across the board. Said system is now granted with a wider field of view plus the heightened ability at identifying bicycles and pedestrians at intersections. Variants primed with blind-spot detection, lane-keep assist and rear cross-traffic alert also gain an automatic emergency steering system too.

For now, Subaru has committed to have the new sixth-gen Impreza hatch go on sale in the American market first starting from Spring next year where it’ll offer buyers a lower-slung alternative to the new XV crossover SUV – a model the new Impreza shares its platform with. Entry to other markets worldwide is expected to follow suit shortly after which.
