2023 EV Sales To Be Higher - More Exciting New Models To Enter Into Malaysia

Despite having announced that vehicle sales for 2023 would drop by 9.8%, the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) yesterday is positive that sales of electric vehicles (EV) will increase. This is based on a few factors such as the entrance of new automotive brands such as GWM and BYD plus various new EV models being introduced by existing players.

MAA president, Datuk Aishah Ahmad explained that currently many new and used EV models from abroad are being brought into the local market. This was evident based on MAA members' relatively higher EV sales as compared to 2021. Just in 2022 there were 2,631 units of EV sold in Malaysia.

Aishah goes on to add that, in 2021 the number of EV sold was a mere 274 units. All the bump in EV sales are thanks to the initiative rolled out by the government in the form of import and excise duty exemption.

She also hopes that the government will further extend these incentives which are to end in Dec 2024. Aishah is positive that the EV adoption will grow rampantly should these incentives be given for a long period such as till 2030.

Aishah also mentioned that the members of the MAA would be able to support the government carbon neutral goal even better if such EV incentives announcement can be made for a proper period of time instead of the yearly extension that is being done now each time the incentive is about to expire.
