BMW i Vision Dee Debuts With Massive Head-Up Display

BMW has unveiled the i Vision Dee, a futuristic concept that intends to give a Digital Emotional Experience (hence its name, DEE) to the amazement of the public at the  Consumer Electronics Show 2023 (CES 2023) in Las Vegas.

The enigma behind Dee follows "less is more" design philosophy and serves as a preview of next-generation electric vehicles due in 2025. Aside from that, the concept depicts a midsize sedan with a pared-down design language that will most likely be seen on an i3 saloon three years from now.

On its exterior design, the German car manufacturer’s latest concept adopts a three-box sedan shape and features a number of characteristic BMW design elements that have been revised, including the kidney grille, twin circular headlights, and the Hofmeister kink.

BMW also included an innovative new Head-Up Display (HUD) on the i Vision Dee which projects across the entire width of the windscreen. The firm also previewed a full-width HUD in this concept, which will likely make its way into upcoming BMW models based on its Neue Klasse platform from 2025 onwards.

Meanwhile the cabin offers an intriguing steering wheel with a central vertical spoke design and touchpoints that can be operated by moving the thumb - a system to which BMW refers to as "phygital" - for controlling the content projected onto the windscreen by the massive HUD.

Another feature called the ‘’Mixed Reality Slider’’ employs low-tech sensors on the instrument panel to allow drivers to control how much information appears on the Head-Up Display, and it includes Dimmable windows.

Adding on to that, Dee also can convey facial emotions, moods, and even speech to demonstrate that it has a human side. A picture of the driver's avatar can be projected onto the side windows as part of the welcome scenario.

The most recent version of BMW's E Ink technology has also been fitted. First seen on an iX concept, the tech is used by Dee and displayed in black and white at CES 2022. Said tech enables for a fully variable and individually configurable external colour scheme. Above all that, i Vision Dee can display up to 32 different colours as the surface is divided into 240 distinct segments.

According to Head of BMW Group Design Adrian van Hooydonk, he said “The vehicle itself becomes your portal to the digital world – with the driver always in control. Implemented the right way, technology will create worthwhile experiences, make you a better driver and simply bring humans and machines closer together.”

“With BMW i Vision Dee, we are showing how the car can be seamlessly integrated into your digital life and become a trusty companion,” continued van Hooydonk.

More information about the I Vision Dee will be published later this year when BMW will hopefully provide actual technical specifications, which presently remains undisclosed. Until then, stay tuned with Caricarz.com for more.
