CariCarz Guide To: Car Sunroofs - What’s The Purpose?

Car safety is one of the most important lessons for parents to teach their children every time they get in and out of a car. Wearing seat belts and not sticking your head or limbs out of sunroofs are things to prioritise because passengers, particularly young children, face extremely high risks of severe injury including amputation or even death, if they are standing in a sunroof in the event of a collision, sudden turn, or stop.

Nonetheless, there appears to be an increase in parents allowing their children to stick their heads out of the sunroof of a moving car. To say the least, this is extremely risky!

Arguably, sunroofs add a classy touch, as most are commonly found in luxury car models and brands. However, as technology to make and incorporate it became more accessible, sunroofs have become more common in brands and models downmarket.

Sunroofs in older cars were manually operated, but nowadays most units are electrically operated and come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and styles. Most factory sliding sunroof options today include a glass panel and are frequently marketed as Moonroofs.

From detachable roofs to foldable roofs, the auto industry has come a long way in terms of open roofs in cars. The sunroof allows light and air to enter and is either fixed or movable, operated manually or electrically. Listed below are the variants of sunroofs found in the latest cars.

There are 7 types of Sunroof in a car, they are:

  • Built in sunroof

  • Spoiler Sunroof

  • Pop-up Sunroof

  • Panoramic Sunroof

  • Folding/Ragtops Sunroof

  • Removable Sunroof

  • Solar Sunroof

However, they are generally regarded as an 'accessory,' and the presence of a sunroof in a vehicle is purely personal preference. If you are unsure whether you should buy a car with a sunroof, we have outlined the benefits and drawbacks of having one in your vehicle.

Advantages:

- It gives the car a distinct look.

- It allows fresh air into the cabin.
- It eliminates the noise factor while your vehicle remains well ventilated with fresh air flow.

- it also helps to better illuminate a car cabin.

Disadvantages:

- Driving at high speeds with the sunroof open has an effect on the car's aerodynamics.

- It's a glass, and it can shatter. If it does, the replacement/repair costs are high.

- Sunroofs eat up headroom

- When your car gets old, rust usually occurs around the opening of the sunroof.

- It's mechanically complex, and will wear out and fail eventually.

Sunroof or no sunroof ?  It all boils down to your preference. But, allowing your children to stick their head out of the sunroof screams danger, even for just a brief moment.
