The ultra luxurious Hongqi L5 has finally received go-ahead for production from the Chinese government, reported CarNewsChina. The Hongqi, which was initially made by FAW Group to meet the mobility requirements of senior Chinese officials, will be sold to the general public at RMB5,000,000 (about RM3,240,000).
The iconic Hongqi CA770 state limousine is referenced to the current Hongqi L5
The state-owned FAW Group coined the famous brand Hongqi back in the 1950s to meet the commuting needs of senior Chinese Communist Party members. With three different series now available, Hongqi automobiles have expanded based on its popularity. The Q-series was developed for corporate clients, the L-series includes the most lavish vehicles created for government officials and highly affluent business people, and the H-series targets the middle-to-high income group.

The Hongqi L5 in ite modern form still retains the classic ques of the iconic Hongqi CA770 featuring the similar round headlamps, a sizable rectangular chrome grille, a red stripe with the Hongqi badge on the bonnet, and brand labels on the front fenders. The vehicle also bears the "红旗" (Hongqi) inscription on the back, which is said to be a replication of “Mao Zedong’s” handwriting.

The Hongqi L5 is a large car with dimensions measuring 5980mm in length, 2090mm in width and 1710mm in height. It also has a wheelbase of 3730mm. In comparison, the Mercedes-Benz Maybach S-Class Z223 is 411mm shorter, 19mm wider, and 20mm shorter. The Hongqi L5 which sits four in opulence weighs a whopping 3150 kg.
The Hongqi L5 would be fitted with large 21” tyres and wheels. A 220KM/H capable 4-litre CA8GV40T-03 V8 engine with 387HP would power the Hongqi L5. This powerplant has been used to power the LS7 SUV and is made by FAW Group.
Despite the hefty price tag, Hongqi as a brand is extremely desirable alternative for affluent Chinese looking for an equivalent alternative to other luxury brands like the Maybach and Rolls-Royce.
