BYD is launching a brand-new EV SUV model at the upcoming Auto Guangzhou 2023 motor show
Chinese marque BYD is set to reveal a new electric crossover model at the upcoming Auto Guangzhou 2023 motor show, happening later this month. Dubbed as the BYD Sea Lion 07, this EV SUV will be placed alongside the Dolphin hatchback and Seal fastback saloon as part of the marque’s Ocean series.

Ahead of its Nov 17 debut, BYD has unveiled a series of teaser images depicting the sketches of the upcoming Sea Lion 07 EV SUV. As revealed by Car News China, the Sea Lion 07’s design looks pretty similar to current BYD models, notably both the Seal fastback saloon and its tall-riding twin, the Seal U SUV. The first of the three sketch images showcases the front part of the Sea Lion 07, which appears to be sporting a similar front face as the aforementioned saloon model.

Moving to the second sketch image, it shows the Sea Lion 07’s sporty coupe crossover body style, featuring sloping roofline with raking rear windscreen, plus pretty prominent wheel arches. Said sketch also reveals the Sea Lion 07 is riding on pretty sizable wheels, though we can’t get their exact measurements for now.

Meanwhile, the third and final sketch image depicts the rear end of the new Sea Lion 07. At one glance, you’ll notice that this EV SUV sports similar taillights design as we saw on the Atto 3, albeit with sharper and slimmer design. Aside from the roof-mounted rear spoiler, the Sea Lion 07’s aggressive rear bumper design can also be seen from this sketch image, featuring what appears to be several air vents and pockets.

Car News China also reported that former Audi and Lamborghini chief designer Wolfgang Egger is leading the design team for the Sea Lion 7, which makes its resemblance to the Seal comes as a no surprise as Egger and co were also involved in designing said model. Apart from these sketch images, BYD has provided very little details about the new Sea Lion 07, though the automaker previously confirmed that future models under the Ocean series will underpin the same e-Platform 3.0 architecture, so this new EV SUV model will share the same underbones as the Atto 3, Dolphin, and the Seal sedan.

Also remains shrouded in mystery is how will this new EV SUV be positioned against the marque’s current EV SUV models, which includes the likes of Atto 3, Song L, and the Seal U. Mind you, the Atto 3 is marketed as a compact (C-segment) EV SUV, while both the Song L and Seal U belong to the bigger midsize D-segment SUV category, with the former standing out as a sportier of the two.
As we mentioned earlier, the all-new BYD Sea Lion 07 is set to make its global debut at the upcoming Auto Guangzhou 2023 motor show, which takes place from Nov 17 onwards. With this new EV SUV model set to make its Chinese market entry later in 2024, it seems that we’ll have to wait slightly longer for the BYD Sea Lion 07 to make its way into our local market.
