PDRM has issued an official statement regarding the viral case of a policeman caught offering ‘summons’ to a couple of UK tourists.

Following the viral video sensation of a local police officer caught on camera offering a cheaper summon ‘option’ to foreign tourists, the Royal Malaysia Police's (PDRM) Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) has issued an official statement.

Published via PDRM’s official Facebook page, JSPT has taken note of the recorded incident and will be investigating the allegation in detail. The department further insisted that it will not tolerate or allow any violations or misconducts enforced by their officers or personnel, while advising the public not to make any wild speculations pertaining to this viral case.

Said policeman was caught on camera offering the tourist couple a cheaper summons 'option'

In case you missed it, a couple of tourists from the UK recently encountered a traffic police stop during their globe-trotting caravan adventure in Malaysia. As shown in a video from their YouTube channel, ‘Tread the Globe’, it depicts  the police officer who stopped them soliciting a bribe in order to let them off the hook.

Said traffic stop was recorded on the couple’s installed camera rig inside their caravan, where said police officer informed the driver of the vehicle that an offence of speeding had been committed by the couple, which prompted the officer to stop them.

Informed by the officer that they were doing 80 KM/H in a 60 KM/H zone, the officer told the driver that such an offence would incur a RM300 fine, which can be paid at any nearby police station. Alternatively, said officer also offered the tourists an on-the-spot payment ‘option’ of only RM100.

This viral incident has sparked outrage on the local social media front, where netizens have critiqued the policeman’s poor integrity for offering such an ‘option’ to said couple, which in-turn has also tarnished the image and reputation of the law enforcement entities in Malaysia. This prompted both PDRM and JSPT specifically to put out an official statement, with many members of the public demanding PDRM to probe an open investigation to resolve this matter.

In addition to said official statement, both the PDRM and JSPT also called forth any members of the public with information related to this incident to contact the JSPT via phone at 03-2266 3356, or e-mail at [email protected] to further their investigation.
