KL Tolls Can Be Renegotiated When Financial Situation Improves - PM Anwar

1280px-Nse-kl-toll.jpeg Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stated at a forum that toll concessions for the highways surrounding Kuala Lumpur can be renegotiated once the nation's financial status improves, according to Free Malaysia Today.

Anwar, who is also Malaysia's Finance Minister, agreed that there are too many toll plazas on the highways surrounding the country's capital.

In the event that tolls are eliminated, highway concessionaires must be paid, and the government is obligated to uphold its end of the bargain with these companies. Toll-related issues were carried over from previous administrations, Anwar said.

“(The issue of) toll is something I inherited. But in the matter of tolls, when we close them, we have to spend. There are standard agreements. “I agree with you. Many people have complained about the tolls in Kuala Lumpur. What do we do now? But it takes time.

“The country’s finances must be strong and only then can we renegotiate. Right now, we are bound to agreements with the toll companies

"Once the country becomes financially strong, we can renegotiate." he said during the forum at the Central Zone Madani Rakyat programme closing ceremony at Kuala Selangor Sports Complex.

For the record, Putrajaya arranged an agreement in April 2022 to assume control of four highways connected to Gamuda Bhd: the Damansara-Puchong Expressway (LDP), the Smart Tunnel, the Shah Alam Expressway (Kesas), and the Sprint Highway. The purpose of the action was to keep tolls from increasing until the end of the corresponding concession periods.
