BYD Sealion 7 EV SUV Set to Debut on Nov 14 – Under RM180K?

The much-anticipated BYD Sealion 7 EV SUV is slated to debut locally on November 14.

Following its booking commencement earlier this week, BYD Malaysia has now confirmed the launch date for its upcoming EV model, the BYD Sealion 7. This much-anticipated midsize EV SUV is slated to make its Malaysian debut next week on Nov 14, as revealed by the automaker via its official Facebook page.

While BYD Malaysia did not explicitly disclose the number of variants we’ll be getting, the automaker did mention that the top-spec Sealion 7 will boast a total system output of 390 kW (523 HP) that allows the SUV to go from 0-100 KM/H in just 4.5 seconds, as well as a maximum EV range of 542 KM (NEDC).

These numbers point towards the dual-motor all-wheel-drive (AWD) variant of the Sealion 7, specifically the one offered in the Hong Kong market. This means that we can expect the Malaysian-spec Sealion 7 to underpin the old e-Platform 3.0 EV architecture instead of the new one used on the 2025 MY BYD Seal.

BYD offers the Sealion 7 in three different guises for markets outside of China, with the baseline RWD model using a single e-motor setup rated at 230 kW (308 HP) and 380 NM, while being juiced by an 82.56-kWh LFP ‘Blade’ battery pack for up to 567 KM of NEDC range. Meanwhile, the mid-spec variant uses the same battery pack as the RWD model, albeit featuring a peppier dual-motor AWD setup rated at 523 HP and 690 NM, reducing its maximum EV range to 542 KM (NEDC).

On top of that, a third variant is offered exclusively to the European market, where it uses the same AWD setup as the second one, albeit featuring a much larger 91.3-kWh LFP ‘Blade’ battery pack.

With the BYD Sealion 7 on the verge of making its local market debut, rumours and speculations regarding its prices have been flying around here and there. But given that its saloon twin, the BYD Seal, currently retails from RM163,800 and RM199,800, perhaps we can expect the Sealion 7 to be priced around the same region, thus putting it on par with some of its upcoming competitors, namely the Tesla Model Y, Xpeng G6, and Leapmotor C10.

Following its local debut, the Sealion 7 will take centre stage at The Exchange 106 mall in Kuala Lumpur from Nov 15 to 17, where a special public showcase event will be held. Here, visitors can stand a chance to size up this upcoming rival of the Xpeng G6 and Tesla Model Y up close, as well as participate in test drive sessions (slot registrations can be made via BYD Malaysia’s official website), which will run from 10 AM to 6 PM throughout the three-day period.
