During the launch of the new JPJ office at Galeria PJH earlier today, Transport Minister, YB Anthony Loke earlier announced that his ministry will begin working with relevant agencies to address loopholes in Malaysia’s vehicle inspection process.

One major issue that came to light despite having been ongoing for the longest time involves commercial vehicle owners temporarily swapping out worn parts, mainly tyres to pass mandatory inspections by Puspakom.

“We are aware of this problem,” Loke said at a press conference citing similarities of this issue with vehicle owners who in the past replaced overly dark-tinted windows (this technically should be privacy window not tinted in recon Japanese vehicles) with compliant tints to pass inspections, only to reinstall it afterward.

“To address that loophole, we revised the regulations. We allowed tinted windows as long as they complied with specific standards, eliminating the need for such actions. Similarly, we are committed to finding practical solutions for this tyre-swapping issue,” he said.

The Transport Ministry is collaborating with the Home Affairs Ministry and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to tackle integrity-related concerns and strengthen enforcement.

Loke highlighted a recent operation as an example of the problem’s scale. On December 30, the Road Transport Department (JPJ) raided the Puspakom facility in Wangsa Maju inspecting 115 vehicles, issuing 69 summonses, taking action against 29 vehicles, and seizing seven vehicles, including two lorries.

JPJ senior enforcement director Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan had also then reported that numerous violations were uncovered, such as lorries operating with unsafe and worn-out retreaded tyres, which pose serious safety risks.

Loke emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring safer roads and holding vehicle owners accountable for compliance with inspection regulations.
