Trump vs. Biden: The Battle Over EV Policies
![]()
Donald Trump began his presidency with a bold executive order dismantling predecessor Joe Biden’s electric vehicle (EV) policies. The order, titled “Unleashing American Energy,” rescinded Biden’s 50% EV sales target by 2030 and halted federal funding for EV charging infrastructure.
Trump framed the rollback as a move to protect American autoworkers, end EV tax credits, and challenge California’s gasoline vehicle ban. He argued these steps would save jobs and revive the economy.

However, industry experts remain skeptical. Billions have already been invested in EV factories and supply chains, making a reversal unlikely. “This transition cannot stop,” said K. Venkatesh Prasad of the Center for Automotive Research.
Environmentalists warn the shift could derail climate goals, while automakers face uncertainty. Stellantis praised the changes as “hugely positive,” but companies like Ford and GM remained cautious.

Labor unions are divided. The United Auto Workers (UAW) sees potential job risks but is open to collaborating with Trump on trade policies. Critics argue EV production requires fewer workers than traditional vehicles, potentially eliminating jobs.
A report from the America First Policy Institute claimed Biden’s EV policies would have cut 200,000 jobs. Yet some analysts dispute this, noting that the broader EV ecosystem—battery manufacturing, supply chains, and infrastructure—has the potential to create more jobs overall.

Despite these moves, the EV transition does still seem resilient. American automakers remain under pressure to compete with international rivals like China, which has advanced rapidly in EV production. Factories built for EVs represent decades-long investments, making it difficult to reverse course.
Experts caution that delaying adoption could leave the U.S. lagging in the race to regain its automotive leadership back.
