New MG4 Revealed: Larger, Lighter & Completely Redesigned

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) in China revealed a new application by MG for the MG4 EV hatchback. This updated specification signals a major product revision rather than just a simple facelift.

The newly approved model is significantly larger, features a redesigned exterior, and is expected to replace the current MG4.

The dimensions of the new MG4 sits 4,395 MM long with a 2,750 MM wheelbase, 1,842 MM wide, and 1,551 MM tall. Compared to the outgoing model, which sits 4,287 MM long, 1,836 MM wide, and 1,516 MM tall, the new model has grown in all aspects, gaining a 45 MM longer wheelbase too.

MG has also given the hatchback a brand-new design. The front end, doors, and rear have been reworked, including a revised roofline. The design cues appear to take inspiration from the MG3, albeit in a larger form, with additional styling elements borrowed from the MG Cyberster.

At the rear, a wide light strip and Cyberster-inspired arrow-shaped taillights enhance the visual appeal.

Under the hood - no pun intended - the new MG4 will feature a 120 kW electric motor capable of a top speed of 160 KM/H, with a curb weight of 1,485 KG. In contrast, the existing MG4 comes with a slightly more powerful 125 kW rear-mounted motor but is heavier at 1,641 KG. This suggests the new MG4 will be better packaged to offer improved efficiency and power-to-weight ratio.

No details of other variants have been disclosed yet, but it is likely that multiple versions will be offered. In Malaysia alone, the MG4 is available in four variants, including the range-topping MG4 XPower, which features a dual-motor all-wheel-drive (AWD) setup rated at 435 PS (320 kW) and 600 NM.

The battery pack for the new model is expected to remain a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) unit, supplied by Rept Battero Energy, though its exact capacity has not yet been disclosed. The current MG4 base variant is powered by a 51 kWh battery.

This completely redesigned MG4 appears to be MG’s attempt to revive sales of its compact EV, which have declined significantly following an initial surge after its mid-2022 launch. The model faces stiff competition from rivals such as the BYD Dolphin, Wuling Bingo, and Geely Xingyuan. In February, the MG4 managed to sell only 13 units in China.

Outside of China, the MG4 has performed better. In Malaysia, for instance, the MG4 has shown promising sales, with 64 units sold in the first two months of 2025.

With MIIT approval being one of the final steps before a vehicle reaches the market, the new MG4 is likely to launch soon, however the question remains - will this updated design, larger dimensions, and revised powertrain turn the models fortunes in China?
