Geely's Aegis Battery Redefines EV Safety Standards
Geely has showcased the cutting-edge safety of its Aegis Gold Brick Battery, which powers the Galaxy E5 and the Proton e.MAS 7 in our market.
In a dramatic demonstration, the Aegis battery survived being crushed by a 36-ton ZTZ-59D tank - 1.8 times the pressure required by China’s latest national safety standards - without any fire, explosion or thermal runaway incident.

The test simulated extreme real-world impacts, with the tank repeatedly rolling over the battery pack, individual cells, and a group of cell packs. Despite the intense pressure, the battery remained structurally intact, showing no signs of bulging, leakage, or damage.
Independent inspections confirmed it far exceeded current regulatory benchmarks.

In March, China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) introduced new EV battery safety standards (GB38031-2025) which was set to take effect in July 2026. These include safety checks after fast-charging, enhanced thermal runaway protection, and for the first time - mandatory bottom impact testing.
Geely’s Aegis Gold Brick Battery is already certified under these new standards. It features a short and thick structure, low internal resistance and minimal heat generation. A heat-resistant dual-coated separator with aluminium oxide helps prevent thermal runaway even when punctured.

Additional safety elements include IP68 and IPX9K protection, Cell-to-Body (CTB) integration, a four-zone energy-absorbing frame and a 2.6MM sandwich-style bottom plate. Internally, the battery design incorporates liquid-electric separation and electrical isolation to effectively dissipate heat.
While national regulations require 24 safety tests, Geely conducts 36, with 23 exceeding mandatory requirements. It is also the first automaker to carry out New Energy Underbody Collision Tests to assess risks from road debris and ground strikes.

Geely’s advanced battery technology is part of a wider strategy led by Ji Yao Tong Xing, a new industrial group that brings together Geely’s battery operations. It manages innovations like the Aegis Gold Brick, ShenDu Golden Battery, and Short Blade Battery to push boundaries in safety and performance.
The Galaxy E5 has proven itself in extreme heat tests and earned certifications from the China Automotive Technology and Research Center. It holds five-star safety ratings from both Euro NCAP and ANCAP, while its right-hand-drive sibling, the Proton e.MAS 7, recently scored a five-star rating in ASEAN NCAP testing.

With nearly one million Galaxy models sold and zero cases of spontaneous combustion, Geely’s battery safety technology has shown real-world reliability.
Furthermore, Geely will open its Global Comprehensive Safety Test Centre later this year and is set to become the world’s largest dedicated EV safety testing facility. The company also plans to open its battery safety patent portfolio to the industry to use freely - aiming to elevate safety standards across the EV sector.
