Half Of AWAS Fines Will Be Used To Boost Road Safety Efforts

The Cabinet Committee on Road Safety and Congestion has agreed upon a new funding method where 50% of the fines collected through the Automated Awareness Safety System (AWAS) by the Road Transport Department (JPJ) will be allocated to the Ministry of Transport (MOT) for road safety projects.

This decision, announced by Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook, will be submitted to the Cabinet for final approval.

“These funds will support various safety measures, including installing solar-powered LED lights in high-risk areas

“For the first phase, we’ve identified three accident-prone zones along the Senawang–Air Keroh stretch. To prevent accidents in the future, more lights will be placed to illuminate these areas at night,” he says.


This comes after a deadly multi-vehicle collision on Dec 23 last year, when an overloaded truck tire detached on the North-South Highway close to the Ayer Keroh R&R area in Melaka, hitting a tour bus.

The driver lost control and veered into oncoming traffic, colliding with a trailer, a Perodua Bezza, and a Toyota Estima MPV.

According to Loke, prior to today's ruling, his ministry had not received specific funding for road safety initiatives.


The minister expressed optimism that the decision would create a more reliable funding stream, facilitating the implementation of measures aimed at reducing road accident risks.
