BYD Malaysia’s Cryptic Teaser – Atto 2 Coming Soon?
-full_normal.jpg)
BYD Cars Malaysia, under the Sime Darby Motors umbrella, dropped a cryptic teaser suggesting that a new model is on the horizon.
While no model has been officially confirmed, the short video features a peculiar message — “Don’t worry, Be Capy =)”, accompanied by paw prints trotting across the screen. It’s a quirky clue that seems to point toward the capybara.

Although the link between BYD and the world’s largest rodent is unclear, the teaser has certainly sparked speculation. One possible connection lies in South America, where the capybara is native to and where BYD has been expanding its footprint, particularly with the Atto 2.

The model, positioned below the Atto 3, has already been previewed for launch in markets like Thailand and Australia. That coincidence might be more than a stretch.
We can safely rule out the possibility of it being the Sealion 6 DM-i. The hybrid model is expected to debut later in the year, likely closer to the sunset of Malaysia’s current EV tax incentives. For now, the focus remains on maximising EV momentum.

In China, the Atto 2 is marketed as the BYD Yuan Up. It sits within the B-segment SUV category smaller than the Atto 3, but larger than the Dolphin hatchback. Dimensions come in at 4,310 MM long with a 2,620 MM wheelbase, 1,830 MM wide and 1,675 MM tall. Its compact proportions are matched with a surprisingly usable cabin.
Three variants are offered in China, powered by two motor-and-battery setups. The entry-level version gets a 70 kW (94 HP) motor with 180 NM of torque, paired to a 32 kWh Blade battery. This configuration provides up to 301 KM of range (CLTC).

The two higher-spec models use a more powerful 130 kW (174 HP) motor producing 290 NM of torque, with a 45.12 kWh Blade battery good for 401 KM of range (CLTC). Acceleration is notably brisk, with the 0–100 KM/H sprint done in just 7.9 secs.
Charging capabilities are decent for its class. The Atto 2 supports DC fast charging at up to 65 kW and 11 kW AC charging. While that’s technically slower than the BYD Dolphin Extended Range variant, which tops out at 80 kW DC, the Atto 2 still manages a 10–80% recharge in around 37 minutes using a fast charger. A full charge using a 7 kW wallbox takes approximately 8 hours.

Design-wise, the Atto 2 adopts BYD’s latest ‘Dragon Face’ styling. This includes a closed-off front grille, sleeker LED headlights, and a prominent lower air intake. The overall look echoes its siblings, with a futuristic and youthful appeal.
Inside, the Atto 2 offers a well-appointed cabin for its segment. Higher trims feature a 12.8-inch rotating infotainment screen, an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, an 8-speaker sound system, and a surround-view camera. Comfort is enhanced by vegan leather seats, which are powered and heated, and a large panoramic sunroof.

Despite its compact size, rear legroom is adequate, and the boot offers 400 litres of storage expandable to 1,340 litres with the rear seats folded down.
In China, the Atto 2 is priced from RMB96,800 (RM62,000) for the base 301 KM variant, going up to RMB119,800 (RM77,000) for the top 401 KM trim. While Malaysian pricing will inevitably be higher due to the RM100,000 price floor on EVs, this still suggests that BYD is preparing to introduce a more affordable electric SUV below the Atto 3.
Until the mystery is solved, all eyes remain on the teaser — and why the inclusion of those paw prints — as we await what could be BYD Malaysia’s next move in the EV space or could it just be a new colourway offering to the ageing Atto 3 😊.
