Johor Building RM66mil Wildlife Crossing on FT50 by 2028

Johor will soon see the construction of its first dedicated wildlife crossing along Federal Route FT50, the main road between Kahang and Mersing.
The project is located within the Central Forest Spine, a 31,000-hectare stretch that links the Labis–Mersing forest reserves to Kota Tinggi and Panti. The area is an important habitat for Malayan tigers, elephants, tapirs and leopards, many of which have been spotted on viral videos crossing the road.

Several collisions involving wildlife have also been reported over the years. To reduce such risks, the state will upgrade a 1.275 km stretch of the road, including a 200m viaduct bridge that stands 8m high. Vegetation will be planted beneath the bridge to guide animals across safely.
The RM66 million project covers studies, land and geological works, utility relocation, a temporary road and the viaduct itself. Tendering has been completed and tree clearing has already begun. Work is expected to finish by Feb 2028.

State health and environment committee chairman Ling Tian Soon said the crossing is necessary to protect both motorists and wildlife. He added that Johor’s conservation efforts will continue even as the state pushes ahead with economic growth.
The initiative brings together multiple agencies, including the Johor Forestry Department, Perhilitan, the Drainage and Irrigation Department and local district offices, alongside community leaders. Ling said it marks an important step in balancing development with biodiversity for the long term.
