Zeekr Tipped for Local Assembly at Proton’s AHTV EV Hub

The launch of Proton’s first-ever EV production facility in Tanjung Malim may just be the start of something bigger for Malaysia’s automotive landscape.
Beyond producing the Proton e.MAS 7 and upcoming e.MAS 5, the national automaker revealed that its partnership with Zhejiang Geely Holding Ltd (Geely) could also open the doors for other premium brands under the group, starting with Zeekr, to be locally assembled within the Automotive High-Tech Valley (AHTV).

If realised, this would mark the entry of Zeekr, Geely’s premium electric vehicle brand, into Malaysia’s local assembly ecosystem. In Malaysia, Zeekr’s portfolio includes the Zeekr 009 EV MPV, Zeekr X, and the recently launched Zeekr 7X EV SUV.
Should Zeekr announce its plans this year, the brand could potentially qualify for conditional excise and import duty waivers as it prepares for CKD operations, a path already taken by BYD.

Such a move would not only bring luxury EV options to Malaysian consumers at competitive price points, but also significantly boost AHTV’s status as a regional hub for new energy vehicle (NEV) production.
With Proton’s new plant designed for scalability, starting with a capacity of 20,000 units annually and the ability to ramp up to 45,000, the infrastructure is already in place to accommodate future expansions.

“The launch of this state-of-the-art EV plant marks a historic milestone for Proton and Malaysia’s automotive industry. This facility, built with advanced technology and a focus on scalability, will be the backbone of our commitment to producing world-class electric vehicles,” said Dr Li Chunrong, CEO of Proton.

Zeekr’s arrival via AHTV would not only deepen Proton’s integration within Geely’s global supply chain, but also support Malaysia’s ambitions to become a Southeast Asian leader in EV manufacturing, technology transfer, and green logistics.
With the government backing AHTV as a high-impact project under the 13th Malaysia Plan, the stage may be set for Malaysia to welcome premium EVs built right at home.
