AHTV Succeeds Shah Alam As Proton’s Next-Generation Manufacturing Hub

Proton has entered a new era in its history, closing its long-running Shah Alam chapter and start a bold new one in Tanjong Malim.
After nearly forty years, all manufacturing operations have now officially shifted to the Proton Automotive High Tech Valley (AHTV) in Tanjong Malim. Adding to which was the fact that the final outgoing Proton Saga ‘MC2’ unit had rolled off the Shah Alam line on Sept 30, 2025, marking the end of an era and the start of something bigger.
The move isn’t just about a new factory. It’s about transformation.

More than 1,400 manufacturing staff have now been relocated to AHTV, bringing decades of skill and pride with them. A welcoming ceremony was held at the new facility, led by Covering Deputy CEO Ainol Azmil and the company’s top management team. For the workers, it was both a homecoming and a fresh start.

The Shah Alam plant, which began operations in 1985, was where Malaysia’s automotive dream took shape. Built on 83 hectares with an investment of about RM370 million, it produced over four million vehicles through the years.
It was also home to the nation’s first automotive research centre and test track, where Malaysian engineers honed their craft and built the foundation for a modern car industry.

That pioneering spirit now continues in Proton’s AHTV.
The new facility brings assembly, R&D and manufacturing together in one place. It operates on advanced Industry 4.0 systems, featuring Malaysia’s largest mechanical press and the first engine assembly line outside China producing the 1.5 TGDi engine.

With an annual capacity of 250,000 vehicles, the new plant is now the central hub for models such as the Saga, Persona, X-series SUVs and the S70. The plant also serves as Geely Group’s main right-hand-drive export base for Southeast Asia.
AHTV is also home to Malaysia’s first dedicated electric vehicle assembly line, marking a major step toward EV industrialisation. By consolidating its operations, Proton is strengthening its local supply network and creating new, high-value jobs in advanced automotive manufacturing.
