The Transport Ministry has launched a feasibility study for the proposed Trans Borneo Railway, a project that could eventually link Sabah, Sarawak, Brunei and Indonesia’s Kalimantan.

The study, which began in June, is expected to be completed by mid-next year, Transport Minister Anthony Loke said.

Consultants are engaging with federal ministries, state governments, agencies and industry players to gather feedback and assess local capacity.

Discussions with Brunei and Indonesia will follow to ensure the project aligns with cross-border development plans.

“The government will evaluate the project proposal based on the findings of the feasibility study, which will cover various aspects including technical requirements, socio-economic benefits, cost considerations and the country’s long-term financial capacity,” Loke stated.

The Trans Borneo Railway was first proposed in 2015 by former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to improve connectivity across Borneo and make it easier to move people, goods and services.

Loke later clarified that the project remains a proposal and has not been awarded to any company.

The feasibility study will give the government a clear picture of whether the railway is technically, financially and economically viable.

If it goes ahead, the Trans Borneo Railway could be a game-changer for the region, boosting trade, connectivity and socio-economic development while linking key cities and communities across Borneo by rail for the first time.
