Genting-Road-Fee-(4)-full_normal.jpg The Ministry of Works has confirmed it has yet to receive any formal proposal from Genting Malaysia Berhad regarding toll collection or new charges for vehicles entering its privately owned areas.

“I have not received any proposal from Genting,” Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi told Bernama.

Nanta also weighed in on a recent comment by Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan in Parliament, who suggested using the term “entry charge” instead of toll to avoid confusion.

“I agree with his suggestion because the term 'toll' can be confusing. We are used to toll being associated with highways. So, I think the term 'entry charge' is easier to understand,” he said.

Genting Malaysia Berhad has announced plans to impose a charge on vehicles using Jalan Genting Highlands, citing the rising costs of maintaining the 24-kilometre private road and its steep slopes.

The company said heavy usage has caused significant wear and tear, necessitating continuous upkeep to ensure safety.

“This is a private initiative on a private road on private land. Genting Malaysia takes the responsibility of maintaining the safety of both the roads and the slopes seriously,” the company said in a statement.

Deputy Works Minister Ahmad Maslan emphasized that any charges should be fair, recommending exemptions for vehicles not using the road for leisure purposes.
