KLIA Fully Enforces Vehicle Access System To Ease Congestion
KLIA has officially moved into full enforcement of its Vehicle Access Management System after a three-month trial showed it could finally ease the long standing congestion at the terminal kerbs.
Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad said the trial period made a clear difference.
The number of vehicles staying beyond the 10-minute limit at drop off and pick up lanes dropped from 50 percent to just 21 percent, proving that most drivers adjusted once the rules were in place.
MAHB managing director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani said the results were strong enough to justify going all in, especially with the year-end travel rush and Visit Malaysia 2026 on the horizon.

“Data from the trial shows that kerbside congestion improves when vehicles observe the 10-minute limit
"The vast majority of KLIA users complied, and with full enforcement at KLIA Terminal 1 starting today, we are ensuring orderly access so that everyone has a fair chance to use the lanes efficiently,” he said.
The system uses licence plate recognition to track when a vehicle arrives and how long it stays. Everyone gets a 10-minute grace period.
After that, overstaying will trigger penalties ranging from RM10 to RM100 depending on duration. Payments can be made with Touch n Go, credit card or MyDebit.

"The aim is simply to keep traffic moving. Lingering cars have long been the cause of bottlenecks, and with most passengers only needing a few minutes to load or unload bags, the airport wants to avoid unnecessary jams," Izani added.
Drivers who need more time still have options. The short term car park offers 15 minutes free, the long term car park gives 30 minutes free, and there is a free public waiting area where drivers can wait before heading to the terminal.
