JPJ To Replace Roadblocks With Smart Cameras On Highways

The Road Transport Department (JPJ) is planning a major shift in how it enforces traffic rules, moving away from traditional roadblocks that often create traffic jams. 

Instead, JPJ will use automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras to monitor vehicles in real time, Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced.

The new system will integrate JPJ’s MySikap database with existing ANPR systems used by highway operators like PLUS, allowing authorities to automatically check road tax, insurance, and stolen vehicle status without stopping cars on busy highways.

“Traditional roadblocks slow everything down and frustrate drivers. With today’s technology, there’s no need to stop vehicles to enforce the law,” Loke said, adding that this data-driven approach will make enforcement faster while reducing congestion for road users.

The initiative is part of a broader reform agenda by the Transport Ministry to improve efficiency and public satisfaction. Loke emphasized that the focus is on outcome-based enforcement, prioritizing accident reduction, better traffic flow, and compliance rather than counting the number of roadblocks.

Highway users can expect a smoother journey as JPJ moves toward camera-based enforcement. Loke also noted that proposals to restrict motorcycles on highways will be carefully studied to ensure they are practical and effective, especially given the rise in fatal accidents involving motorcyclists in recent years.
