Honda’s Ohio EV Hub Faces a RM62.6 Billion Nightmare: Afeela EV is Dead

The "PlayStation on wheels" has officially hit Game Over. In a shocking joint announcement on March 25, 2026, Sony and Honda confirmed they are scrapping the development of the Afeela 1 sedan and its follow-up SUV.
This isn't just a minor delay; it is a full-scale retreat that leaves Honda’s brand-new, US$1 billion (~RM3.99 billion) EV Hub in Marysville, Ohio, staring down a massive production void. As the dust settles, Honda is bracing for an extraordinary loss of up to 2.5 trillion yen (approx. RM62.6 billion), the automaker's first annual loss in nearly 70 years.
The Domino Effect
The cancellation comes just two weeks after Honda overhauled its electrification strategy on March 12, pulling the plug on its own Honda 0 Series EVs and the anticipated Acura RDX electric successor for the U.S. market.

Because the Sony-Honda joint venture, Sony Honda Mobility (SHM), relied on the hardware, software, and manufacturing assets Honda was set to provide, the shift "fundamentally altered" the partnership's foundation. Without this shared architecture to serve as a technical skeleton, the Afeela project was left with no viable path to production.
In a terse press statement, SHM admitted that Honda’s strategic shift had “fundamentally altered” the business, making the production of the Afeela unviable.
What Actually Killed the Afeela?

While Sony’s tech was impressive, featuring PlayStation Remote Play, 360-Reality Audio, and AI-driven dashboards, the "hardware" reality proved too difficult.
- The Subsidy Cliff: In the U.S. (Afeela's primary market), the dismantling of EV incentives and the easing of fossil fuel regulations under the current administration have killed the "EV Gold Rush."
- Asian Competitiveness: Honda explicitly admitted that they were unable to provide "value for money" compared to newer, hyper-efficient EV manufacturers (like BYD and Xiaomi).
