RM1 Million Car But RM0 Value On Your Life? This Calculator Tells You Exactly What Happens If You Never Make It Home
Some of us carefully calculate everything we do. We track our monthly installments, our food delivery expenses, our stock portfolios, and exactly how much it costs to insure our cars. But have you ever stopped to calculate the actual cost of your absence?
It’s a dark, uncomfortable question, but it’s one we desperately need to face.
To shake us out of our driving complacency, Volvo Car Malaysia has teamed up with the personal finance experts at Mr Money TV to launch the Selamat Calculator. And no, it’s not a tool to help you get rich, it’s an interactive test designed to measure the financial and emotional chaos left behind if you suddenly don't make it home tonight.
Why Are We Insuring Our Luxuries But Not Our Lives?
As Peter Yong, CEO & Co-Founder of Mr Money TV, perfectly puts it: “We often prioritise luxuries while overlooking the silent 'investments' that keep us around to enjoy them.”
Think about it: we wouldn't dream of driving a luxury car out of the showroom without insurance. Yet, when we get behind the wheel, we text while driving, tailgating, or push through severe exhaustion just to get home 10 minutes faster. We put a premium value on the metal box we sit in, but treat our own survival like it has a RM0 price tag.
How Does The "Selamat Calculator" Work?

Think of it like those classic viral personality quizzes, except this one has massive real-world consequences. The tool guides you through a series of lifestyle and financial questions to estimate the ripple effect your sudden absence would cause.
It breaks your life down across three distinct dimensions:
- The Financial Burden: Your outstanding housing loans, car hire purchases, personal commitments, and student debts that will suddenly be transferred onto your parents, spouse, or kids.
- The Practical Void: The invisible daily roles you play. Are you the family chauffeur? The sibling who pays the utility bills? The main caretaker?
- The Unfinished Future: The milestones, unrealized career progress, and family moments that abruptly stop the moment a driver takes their eyes off the road.
Once you key in your data, the calculator assigns you to one of four distinct life-stage profiles:
"Selamat" Is More Than Just A Hello
In Malaysia, we use the word Selamat casually every day. Selamat Pagi, Selamat Jalan, Selamat Hari Raya. But as Patricia Yaw, Sales & Marketing Director of Volvo Car Malaysia, points out, the word holds a much deeper weight.
"In every ‘Selamat’ we say, there’s a quiet wish that our loved ones arrive, live and return safely. The true value of our Selamat isn’t measured by wealth but in the people we hold close and the accomplishments we make.”

The calculator isn't trying to put an actual price tag on a human life. Instead, it’s a blunt wake-up call to remind us that road safety isn’t just a regulatory obligation or a way to avoid a PDRM saman. It’s a shared culture of responsibility.
The most important "high-return investments" you can make today don't involve crypto or stocks. They are the simplest choices: buckling your seatbelt, pulling over when you're sleepy, or exercising patience in peak-hour traffic.
Want to see where you stand? Take five minutes out of your day and test your profile at volvocarmalaysia.com/selamat. It might just change how you handle your next drive home.
