Puspakom has officially rolled out Malaysia’s first AI-powered undercarriage inspection system, cutting down commercial vehicle check times by a massive 90%.

Instead of taking 10 tedious minutes for an examiner to manually crawl beneath heavy trucks and buses, intelligent image scanners now finish the job in just one minute. Developed alongside local tech firm Keymag Sdn Bhd, this new system promises faster turnaround times, fewer delivery delays, and cleaner audit trails for fleet operators.

How The AI System Works

The system uses intelligent image analysis to automate vehicle component and defect detection beneath the vehicle.

As images of a vehicle's undercarriage are captured, the AI-assisted system analyses the visuals to identify potential anomalies for further verification.

According to Puspakom, the system is capable of detecting defects with greater consistency, including:

  • Structural damage
  • Chassis corrosion
  • Engine and transmission oil leaks
  • Brake system faults
  • Axle defects

By mapping every component against thousands of historical data points, the software flags potential anomalies that a human inspector might take far longer to spot or physically access.

Will AI Replace Human Inspectors at Puspakom?

The short answer is no.

Puspakom confirmed that artificial intelligence will not automatically fail or pass a vehicle on its own. Instead, the system operates strictly as a decision-support tool.

  • AI Scans: Highlights suspicious wear, corrosion, or leaks on a digital display.
  • Examiner Reviews: A trained Puspakom vehicle examiner inspects the AI's flagged findings.
  • Final Verdict: The human examiner retains 100% authority to issue the official pass/fail certification

This double-layered approach improves consistency while ensuring human oversight remains at the core of statutory vehicle safety compliance.

Why This Is Huge For Lorry Drivers & Supply Chains

In the commercial transport sector, vehicle ground time directly impacts profits.

"Reducing the time required for an AI-powered undercarriage inspection from 10 minutes to about one minute... gives a lorry driver approximately 10 additional minutes that can be spent on making deliveries, serving customers or simply getting home sooner. In an industry where time is money, this is invaluable."

—Mahmood Razak Bahman, CEO of Puspakom

Furthermore, because the AI automatically logs digital records of every scan, fleet owners have an objective, tamper-proof record should they wish to verify inspection results.

What’s Next: Project Astra and AI Tyre Checks

The undercarriage scanner is currently live via Puspakom’s Mobile Truck Service (MTS) for heavy commercial vehicles. However, Puspakom is preparing a much broader digital push over the next 24 months:

  • Project Astra: An above-carriage AI inspection system developed in collaboration with Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM).
  • AI Tyre Scans: Automated tread depth and wall damage detection systems to eliminate manual gauge checks.
