Reviews

Summary

The Audi Q8 Sportback e-tron is a five-seat premium electric SUV coupé combining the practicality of Audi's flagship Q8 e-tron with a lower, more aerodynamic Sportback roofline. Malaysia received two variants: the advanced 50 quattro and more powerful S line 55 quattro, both using dual electric motors and quattro all-wheel drive.

The advanced 50 produces 250 KW or 340 PS and 664 NM, while the S line 55 increases output to 300 KW or 408 PS and 664 NM. Audi Malaysia's current model page quotes up to 594 KM WLTP range for the 114-kWh S line 55, together with 170-KW DC charging and a 31-minute 10% to 80% charging time.

Interior

Dashboard

The dashboard follows Audi's three-screen digital layout. A 12.3-inch Audi Virtual Cockpit Plus sits directly ahead of the driver, while the centre console incorporates a 10.1-inch upper MMI touchscreen and an 8.6-inch lower touchscreen.

A head-up display is also included in the Malaysian specification, projecting navigation and driving information closer to the driver's line of sight.

Centre Console

The upper 10.1-inch MMI display handles navigation, multimedia and vehicle settings, while the lower 8.6-inch display controls climate functions and selected shortcuts. Haptic and acoustic feedback provide confirmation when virtual buttons are pressed.

A compact electronic gear selector leaves additional space for storage and cup holders around the centre console.

Instrument Cluster

The 12.3-inch Audi Virtual Cockpit Plus can display navigation, speed, range, battery information, energy consumption and assistance-system status. Several display layouts allow the driver to prioritise conventional instruments or navigation information.

Seats

The Sportback advanced 50 receives Valcona leather upholstery instead of the leather/leatherette combination fitted to the regular-bodied advanced 50. Electrically adjustable front seats, four-way lumbar adjustment and driver-seat memory are standard.

The S line 55 adds S line-specific sports detailing, contrasting stitching and model-specific interior trim.

Space

The 2,928-MM wheelbase provides generous accommodation for five adults. A largely flat rear floor improves comfort for the centre passenger, while the Sportback roofline sacrifices only a small amount of rear headroom compared with the conventional Q8 e-tron SUV.

Steering Functions

A leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel provides controls for media, voice commands, driver information and assistance systems. Paddles behind the steering wheel allow the driver to adjust regenerative-braking strength.

The S line 55 receives a sportier three-spoke flat-bottomed steering wheel with S line detailing.

Storage Space

Cabin storage includes large door pockets, glovebox storage, centre-console compartments and areas beneath the front armrest.

The electric architecture also provides a separate 62-litre front luggage compartment, useful for storing charging cables and smaller bags.

Cup Holders

Two cup holders are located within the front centre console, while rear passengers receive additional drink holders through the folding centre armrest and door pockets.

Charging Ports

USB connectivity is provided for front and rear occupants, together with Audi Phone Box smartphone integration. Wireless smartphone charging is included through the Phone Box system on the Malaysian specification.

Build Quality

Valcona leather, aluminium trim, soft-touch dashboard materials and extensive gloss-black surfaces give the cabin a suitably premium finish. The advanced 50 Sportback receives dark matte brushed aluminium trim, while the S line introduces additional sports-themed details.

The S line 55 also adds a panoramic glass roof, power-assisted soft-closing doors and an air-ionisation and fragrance system.

Boot Space

The Sportback body provides 528 litres of rear luggage capacity, compared with 569 litres in the conventional Q8 e-tron SUV. Together with the 62-litre front compartment, total readily accessible luggage capacity is approximately 590 litres.

Folding the rear seatbacks considerably expands cargo space, although the sloping roofline limits maximum height compared with the regular SUV.

Exterior

Body Dimensions

The Q8 Sportback e-tron measures 4,915 MM long, 1,937 MM wide and 1,619 MM tall, supported by a 2,928-MM wheelbase. Its lower roof makes it 14 MM shorter in height than the regular Q8 e-tron SUV while maintaining the same length and wheelbase.

Front View

The front is dominated by Audi's enclosed Singleframe grille, flanked by large air curtains and sharply defined lighting units. A light strip above the grille visually links the lamps and highlights Audi's revised two-dimensional four-ring emblem.

The S line 55 adds a more aggressive exterior treatment, illuminated Singleframe elements and sportier bumper detailing.

Rear View

The Sportback roofline slopes gradually into a short rear deck and integrated roof spoiler. A continuous LED lighting strip runs across the tailgate, while the sculpted lower bumper eliminates the need for simulated exhaust outlets.

Its aerodynamic shape contributes to a drag coefficient of approximately 0.24, compared with 0.27 for the conventional Q8 e-tron SUV.

Headlamps

The advanced 50 receives Matrix LED headlamps, while the S line 55 upgrades to Digital Matrix LED headlights with advanced masking and programmable lighting functions.

The S line also receives Singleframe projector lighting, creating additional welcome and departure animations around the grille.

Tail Lamps

Full-LED rear lamps are connected by a continuous light strip across the tailgate. Dynamic turn indicators create a sweeping animation when signalling, while the wide lighting arrangement emphasises the Sportback's broad stance.

Side Mirror

The advanced 50 uses conventional electrically adjustable and power-folding exterior mirrors. The S line 55 replaces them with Audi's distinctive virtual exterior mirrors, using compact external cameras that display their images through screens positioned inside the front doors.

The virtual mirrors also contribute to reduced aerodynamic drag and provide adjustable viewing modes for parking, turning and highway driving.

Brakes

Large ventilated disc brakes operate together with regenerative braking, ABS, electronic stability control and Audi's brake-energy recuperation system. The Sportback advanced 50 is visually distinguished by red-painted brake calipers.

Wheels

The advanced 50 rides on 20-inch Graphite Grey five-arm Aero ring alloy wheels, while the S line 55 receives larger 21-inch Audi Sport five-arm Aero structure wheels finished in Black Metallic.

The 21-inch setup uses approximately 265/45 R21 tyres and gives the S line a noticeably more performance-focused appearance.

Features

Active Safety

Standard active-safety equipment includes Audi pre sense front and rear, autonomous emergency braking, forward-collision warning, electronic stability control, ABS and tyre-pressure monitoring.

Front and rear cross-traffic assistance can also warn the driver of approaching vehicles when entering junctions or reversing from parking spaces.

Passive Safety

The Malaysian Q8 e-tron range is equipped with eight airbags, supported by ISOFIX child-seat mountings and a reinforced passenger cell surrounding the floor-mounted high-voltage battery.

Drive Modes

Audi Drive Select provides several settings that alter motor response, steering and air-suspension behaviour. Available programmes include Auto, Comfort, Dynamic, Efficiency, Individual, Allroad and Offroad depending on vehicle configuration.

A dedicated Range mode can also reduce selected comfort functions and limit performance to maximise the remaining driving distance.

Infotainment

The MMI Navigation Plus with MMI Touch Response system combines the 10.1-inch and 8.6-inch displays with navigation, Bluetooth, voice commands and connected Audi services.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration are supported.

Driver Assistance

Driver assistance includes adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, efficiency assist, swerve assist, turn assist and front and rear cross-traffic assistance.

Parking assistance is supported by cameras and ultrasonic sensors, while Audi developed the platform to accommodate up to approximately 40 assistance functions depending on market and equipment package.

Sound System

A Bang & Olufsen Premium Sound System is included in the Malaysian Q8 e-tron specification. Higher-equipped 55 models use a 16-speaker 3D system producing approximately 705 watts, delivering surround audio throughout the cabin.

Performance

Engine

The advanced 50 uses one asynchronous electric motor on each axle, producing up to 250 KW or 340 PS and 664 NM in boost mode.

The S line 55 uses a higher-output dual-motor setup producing 300 KW or 408 PS and 664 NM.

Transmission

Each motor operates through a single-speed reduction transmission. The electric drivetrain delivers continuous torque without conventional gear changes.

Drivetrain

Both Malaysian variants use Audi's fully electric quattro all-wheel-drive system, with an asynchronous motor powering each axle. Torque distribution is electronically adjusted according to grip, acceleration demand and driving conditions.

During relaxed driving, the vehicle can favour the rear motor for improved efficiency and bring the front motor into operation almost instantly when additional traction or performance is required.

Acceleration

The advanced 50 accelerates from 0 to 100 KM/H in 6.0 seconds, while the S line 55 reduces this to 5.6 seconds. Both are electronically limited to a maximum speed of 200 KM/H

Fuel Consumption

The advanced 50 uses a 95-kWh gross / 89-kWh usable lithium-ion battery. It supports up to 150-KW DC charging, with a 10% to 80% recharge taking approximately 28 minutes. AC charging is rated at 11 KW, requiring around 9.15 hours for a full charge under suitable conditions.

Its Sportback body was homologated for up to approximately 505 KM WLTP, depending on specification.

The S line 55 uses a larger 114-kWh gross / 106-kWh usable battery and supports 22-KW AC charging in the Malaysian specification, requiring around six hours for a full charge. DC charging increases to 170 KW, allowing 10% to 80% in approximately 31 minutes

Audi Malaysia's current model page lists the Sportback's maximum WLTP range at 594 KM for the 114-kWh version. Earlier launch homologation quoted up to 600 KM depending on specification.

Comfort

Convenience

Standard convenience equipment includes keyless vehicle operation, power-adjustable front seats with memory, a powered tailgate, Audi Phone Box, four-zone climate control and a head-up display.

The S line 55 adds soft-closing doors, a panoramic glass roof, virtual exterior mirrors, air ionisation and cabin fragrance functions.

Rear Air Vents

Four-zone automatic climate control is standard, giving rear passengers dedicated ventilation and separate temperature adjustment.

Ride Comfort

The advanced 50 uses sport adaptive air suspension, while the S line 55 Sportback also receives the sport-oriented air-suspension configuration. The system automatically varies ride height and damping according to speed, road conditions and Audi Drive Select mode.

Ride height can vary across a total range of approximately 76 MM. At highway speeds, the body can lower by up to 26 MM for stability and aerodynamic efficiency, while Offroad settings can raise the vehicle for additional clearance.

Sound Insulation

Extensive body insulation, acoustic glazing and the near-silent electric motors give the Q8 Sportback e-tron a particularly refined cruising environment. The streamlined 0.24 drag coefficient also helps reduce wind noise at higher speeds.

Wrap Up

Conclusion

The Audi Q8 Sportback e-tron remains an appealing premium EV for buyers who value refinement, traditional luxury and understated styling more than headline acceleration figures. The Sportback's lower roof improves aerodynamics and range while sacrificing only 41 litres of boot capacity compared with the conventional Q8 e-tron SUV.

The S line 55 is the stronger choice, combining 408 PS, up to 594 KM of current quoted WLTP range, 22-KW AC charging, Digital Matrix LED headlamps, virtual mirrors, 21-inch wheels and a premium B&O audio system. Audi Malaysia's current e-showroom price of RM399,990 also makes remaining S line 55 stock substantially more attractive than its displayed RM491,990 list price.

Its disadvantages are increasingly technical rather than luxurious. The 170-KW peak DC charging rate is modest beside newer 800V premium EVs capable of 300 to 400 KW, and the Q8's underlying platform is now older than newer Audi models such as the Q6 e-tron. Nevertheless, its excellent air suspension, strong cabin refinement, generous equipment and current discounted pricing keep it relevant as a comfortable long-distance electric luxury SUV.
