Ford Mustang Mach-E

The Ford Mustang Mach-E is a five-seat fully electric performance SUV combining Mustang-inspired styling with a practical five-door body. The Malaysian-market examples were Premium AWD Extended Range versions equipped with two electric motors, a 98.7-kWh gross battery and all-wheel drive.

Combined output is 258 KW or 351 PS and 580 NM, allowing 0–100 KM/H in 5.8 seconds. Ford quotes up to 549 KM of WLTP range, while the Extended Range battery supports DC charging at up to 150 KW. The RM450,000 parallel-import price included a five-year APEG warranty covering the ECU, powertrain and high-voltage battery.

The dashboard is dominated by a large 15.5-inch portrait-format SYNC 4A touchscreen, accompanied by a separate 10.2-inch digital instrument display behind the steering wheel. Most climate, navigation, entertainment and vehicle settings are integrated into the central screen.

A physical rotary volume controller is integrated directly into the lower portion of the touchscreen, providing one conventional control within the otherwise heavily digital dashboard.

The floating centre console provides storage beneath the upper section, together with cup holders, smaller item compartments and a rotary electronic gear selector. A wireless smartphone charging area is also included on the Premium specification.

A 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster presents speed, battery condition, remaining range, navigation and driver-assistance information. Its graphics also change depending on the selected drive mode.

The Malaysian Premium AWD units receive black perforated Sensico synthetic-leather upholstery with red contrast stitching. Both front seats provide eight-way powered adjustment, while the rear bench uses a 60:40 split-folding arrangement.

The long 2,984-MM wheelbase and flat EV floor provide good accommodation for five occupants. Rear legroom is generous for the vehicle's overall length, while the absence of a conventional transmission tunnel improves comfort for the centre rear passenger.

The multifunction steering wheel provides controls for audio, calls, voice commands, cruise assistance and the digital display. Adjustment for both reach and height allows the driver to tailor the driving position.

Cabin storage includes large front door pockets, glovebox compartments and multiple centre-console areas. The EV platform also allows the Mach-E to provide an additional 81-litre front luggage compartment, useful for charging cables or smaller bags.

The front compartment is washable and separated from the main passenger cabin, making it particularly useful for wet or dirty items.

Two cup holders are integrated into the front centre console, with additional drink storage provided within the rear armrest and door compartments.

USB charging connections are provided for both front and rear passengers, while a wireless smartphone charger is standard on the Premium AWD specification.

Sensico upholstery, a dark headliner, red stitching and premium soft-touch materials give the cabin a sporty presentation. The fixed panoramic glass roof also creates a more open atmosphere while incorporating a special coating designed to reduce heat entering the cabin.

The rear luggage compartment provides 402 litres with the rear seats raised and expands to approximately 1,420 litres when they are folded. A further 81 litres of storage is available beneath the bonnet.

The Mustang Mach-E measures approximately 4,713 MM long, 1,881 MM wide and 1,624 MM tall, supported by a long 2,984-MM wheelbase. These proportions give it a footprint comparable to a premium mid-sized SUV despite its coupé-inspired roofline.

The front combines Mustang-inspired styling with an EV-specific closed fascia. A long sculpted bonnet, prominent pony emblem and sharply shaped headlamps give the Mach-E a distinctly sportier appearance than a conventional electric family SUV.

The lack of a conventional combustion-engine grille also helps improve aerodynamic efficiency while allowing additional luggage storage beneath the bonnet.

Pronounced rear haunches, a sloping roof and Mustang-style tri-bar tail lamps give the Mach-E a recognisable appearance from behind. A roof spoiler and sculpted tailgate further reinforce its crossover-coupé proportions.

LED headlamps are standard on the UK-specification Premium model, together with automatic lighting and distinctive LED daytime-running graphics. The narrow design visually connects the electric SUV to the wider Mustang family.

The rear receives full-LED lamps using the Mustang's signature three-bar vertical graphics. Their sequential appearance provides one of the clearest visual links between the Mach-E and Ford's traditional Mustang sports car.

The exterior mirrors are electrically adjustable and power-folding. The Mach-E also uses its distinctive E-Latch electronic door-release system, replacing conventional exterior handles with small pillar-mounted buttons and discreet front-door grab points.

Four-wheel disc brakes work together with regenerative braking, ABS, electronic brake-force management and stability control. The Premium AWD units brought into Malaysia were distinguished by red-painted brake calipers.

The Malaysian-imported Premium AWD rides on 19-inch two-tone machined alloy wheels. The comparable Ford specification pairs its 19-inch wheels with 225/55 R19 tyres, balancing handling with sufficient sidewall for everyday road use.

Active-safety equipment includes Pre-Collision Assist with autonomous emergency braking, forward-collision warning, distance alert, collision mitigation and Evasive Steering Assist. Lane Keeping Aid and Lane Departure Warning are also included.

The Mach-E uses a dedicated battery-electric vehicle structure with multiple airbags, ISOFIX mounting points and a reinforced underfloor battery enclosure. Stability and traction-control systems are also integrated with the electric all-wheel-drive powertrain.

Three selectable drive modes are provided: Whisper, Active and Untamed. Active provides balanced everyday responses, Whisper prioritises smooth and quiet operation, while Untamed sharpens accelerator response and changes the vehicle's artificial sound and ambient-lighting presentation.

One Pedal Drive can also be activated, allowing stronger regenerative deceleration when the accelerator is released.

Ford's SYNC 4A system runs on the 15.5-inch touchscreen and supports navigation, connected vehicle functions, voice control and over-the-air software updates. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard.

The Premium AWD features Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go and Lane Centring, together with BLIS blind-spot monitoring and Cross Traffic Alert.

A 360-degree camera assists with parking and manoeuvring, while front and rear sensors further improve visibility around the relatively wide SUV.

The Malaysian Premium AWD units receive a 10-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system. A dashboard-mounted soundbar-style speaker arrangement forms part of the system's distinctive design.

The Premium AWD Extended Range uses two electric motors, one powering each axle. Combined output stands at 258 KW or 351 PS and 580 NM.

Each motor operates through a single-speed electric reduction gear, delivering immediate torque without conventional gear changes.

The Mach-E uses an electronically controlled all-wheel-drive system, with separate front and rear electric motors. Power distribution is continuously adjusted according to acceleration demand and available traction.

The Malaysian Premium AWD Extended Range completes the 0–100 KM/H sprint in 5.8 seconds and has a maximum speed of approximately 179 KM/H.

The imported model uses a 98.7-kWh gross lithium-ion battery, with usable capacity of approximately 91 kWh. Official driving range is rated at up to 549 KM WLTP.

Extended Range versions support 11-KW AC charging and up to 150-KW DC fast charging. Ford stated that approximately 106 KM of range could be added in ten minutes at a suitable rapid charger, while a 10% to 80% recharge required around 45 minutes for this Malaysian-import specification.

Standard Premium equipment includes keyless entry, E-Latch electronic doors, electrically adjustable front seats, wireless smartphone charging, a fixed panoramic glass roof and a hands-free powered tailgate.

The vehicle can also use connected Ford services for selected remote vehicle and charging functions, although functionality may depend on account and regional compatibility for parallel-imported Malaysian vehicles.

Dual-zone automatic climate control is standard. Dedicated centre-console vents provide cooling airflow to the rear passengers, with additional lower vents serving the rear footwells.

The Mach-E uses MacPherson-strut front and multi-link rear suspension. Its low-mounted battery improves its centre of gravity, while the suspension is tuned more firmly than many comfort-focused electric SUVs to give the vehicle a sportier character.

The 19-inch wheels provide slightly more tyre sidewall than the larger-wheel GT variants, helping maintain reasonable everyday comfort.

The electric drivetrain operates quietly during normal driving, while the enclosed body and panoramic roof provide good general refinement. The Mach-E can deliberately generate an enhanced artificial drivetrain sound in its sportier driving modes, particularly Untamed.

The Ford Mustang Mach-E Premium AWD brought into Malaysia combines strong performance, practical SUV space and distinctive Mustang styling. Its 351-PS dual-motor drivetrain, 549-KM WLTP range, panoramic roof, B&O audio and comprehensive driver assistance still make it a well-equipped premium EV.

Its biggest problem in Malaysia is not the vehicle itself but its market position. The Mach-E was never officially launched by Ford's Malaysian distributor, with the RM450,000 examples instead supplied through G-Mart as UK-specification parallel imports. This means its pricing was substantially higher than many officially supported EV rivals, while after-sales arrangements depend on the importer rather than Ford Malaysia's normal new-car programme.

The older 150-KW DC charging system also now trails newer 800V competitors, and the 402-litre rear boot is not especially large for an SUV of this size. Nevertheless, the Mach-E remains an interesting choice for buyers wanting an electric SUV with genuine performance, distinctive styling and a stronger enthusiast character than many conventional family EVs.
