Mercedes-AMG EQE 53

The Mercedes-AMG EQE 53 4MATIC+ is a five-seat electric performance saloon launched in Malaysia in June 2023 as a single fully imported variant. It was priced at RM649,888 on-the-road without insurance and came standard with the AMG Dynamic Plus Package.

Its dual-motor powertrain produces 626 PS and 950 NM normally, increasing to 687 PS and 1,000 NM through the boost function. A 90.56-kWh battery provides up to 527 KM of WLTP range. Mercedes-Benz Malaysia provides a four-year unlimited-mileage vehicle warranty, while the EQE battery is covered for ten years or 250,000 KM.

The dashboard is dominated by the MBUX Hyperscreen, which places three displays beneath a single curved glass panel. AMG carbon-fibre trim, active ambient lighting and red contrast stitching create a more performance-focused atmosphere than the regular EQE. 

The centre console is finished in AMG carbon fibre and flows into the dashboard beneath the Hyperscreen. It contains storage compartments, cup holders and frequently used vehicle controls while retaining a clean, technology-focused layout. 

A 12.3-inch digital instrument display provides AMG-specific graphics for speed, power output, battery condition and driving modes. It is supplemented by a head-up display and AMG Track Pace performance information.

AMG sports seats are upholstered in black and space-grey ARTICO synthetic leather with MICROCUT microfibre and red stitching. The powered front seats include memory and heating functions, while AMG badges and red seatbelts reinforce the cabin’s sporting character.

The long 3,120-MM wheelbase and flat rear floor provide generous legroom for five occupants. Rear space is suitable for adults, although the low fastback roofline creates a more enclosed environment than an SUV.

The flat-bottomed AMG Performance steering wheel is wrapped in perforated Nappa leather. AMG rotary controllers provide quick access to drive modes and performance settings, while aluminium paddles adjust the regenerative-braking strength.

Storage is available through the glovebox, door pockets, centre-console compartments and front armrest. The rear seatbacks can be folded when additional space is needed for longer items.

Two cup holders are positioned within the front centre console. Additional drink storage is provided through the rear centre armrest and door pockets.

USB-C connections are provided for front and rear occupants, together with wireless smartphone charging at the front. The ports support device charging and selected data connections.

ARTICO, MICROCUT microfibre, carbon-fibre trim, metal switchgear and red stitching create a premium and performance-oriented cabin. The Hyperscreen provides strong visual impact, although its glossy surfaces can attract fingerprints and reflections.

The rear luggage compartment provides 430 litres of capacity. Its size is reasonable for a performance saloon, although the boot opening is less versatile than the liftback design of the larger EQS.

The AMG EQE measures 4,964 MM long, 1,906 MM wide and 1,492 MM tall, with a 3,120-MM wheelbase. Width increases to 2,104 MM with the mirrors extended, while kerb weight stands at approximately 2,525 KG. 

The front features an AMG-specific black panel grille with vertical chrome struts, an integrated Mercedes-Benz star and AMG lettering. A high-gloss black A-wing front apron, splitter and aerodynamic air curtains give it a more aggressive appearance than the regular EQE. 

The one-bow body ends in a short rear deck fitted with a larger AMG spoiler lip. An aerodynamically optimised diffuser, AMG rear apron and black exterior detailing complete the performance-focused design. 

DIGITAL LIGHT headlamps are standard with Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus. They can intelligently vary the lighting pattern and project an AMG-specific animation when the vehicle is unlocked or locked.

Full-LED tail lamps are connected by a continuous lighting strip across the rear. Their three-dimensional internal graphics complement the smooth rear body and prominent AMG spoiler.

The Mirror Package provides electrically adjustable and power-folding exterior mirrors. Their black finish forms part of the AMG Night Package, while the surround-view cameras assist when manoeuvring the wide body. 

The AMG high-performance braking system uses six-piston front calipers with 415 x 33-MM discs and single-piston rear calipers with 378 x 22-MM discs. Red-painted calipers are standard, while the i-Booster integrates mechanical braking with energy recuperation. 

The Malaysian model rides on 21-inch AMG multi-spoke alloy wheels finished in matt black with high-sheen surfaces. Their aerodynamically optimised design is paired with wide performance tyres. 

Active-safety equipment includes autonomous emergency braking, electronic stability control, traction control, tyre-pressure monitoring, lane intervention and evasive steering assistance. PRE-SAFE Impulse Side can also prepare the occupants when a side collision is detected. 

A comprehensive airbag system, rigid passenger cell and protected underfloor battery structure provide occupant protection. Mercedes-Benz also subjects the battery to impact, penetration, overheating and electrical-isolation testing.

AMG Dynamic Select provides Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport+ and Individual modes. These settings alter power output, suspension, steering, sound and all-wheel-drive behaviour, while Race Start unlocks maximum performance through the boost function. 

The MBUX Hyperscreen combines a 12.3-inch instrument cluster, 17.7-inch OLED central touchscreen and 12.3-inch OLED passenger display. It supports MBUX augmented-reality navigation, voice control, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. 

The Driving Assistance Plus Package includes Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC, Active Steering Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist and evasive manoeuvre support. The Parking Package adds Active Parking Assist, a 360-degree camera and preparation for remote and memory parking functions.

A 710-W Burmester 3D surround-sound system uses 15 speakers throughout the cabin. AMG Sound Experience additionally produces synthetic exterior and interior sound profiles that respond to the selected drive mode and accelerator input. 

Two AMG-specific permanent-magnet synchronous motors produce a combined 460 KW or 626 PS and 950 NM. With Race Start and the boost function activated, output temporarily rises to 505 KW or 687 PS and 1,000 NM. 

Each motor operates through a single-speed electric reduction transmission. Power is delivered immediately without conventional gear changes, while AMG-specific cooling allows the motors to maintain strong performance under repeated acceleration.

AMG Performance 4MATIC+ continuously distributes power between the front and rear axles. The fully variable system can prioritise traction, efficiency or rear-biased handling according to the selected mode and driving conditions.

The EQE 53 accelerates from 0 to 100 KM/H in 3.5 seconds normally. With the AMG Dynamic Plus boost function and sufficient battery charge, the sprint falls to 3.3 seconds, while top speed increases from 220 to 240 KM/H.

The 90.56-kWh usable lithium-ion battery provides up to 527 KM of WLTP range, with official consumption rated between approximately 20.2 and 22.7 kWh per 100 KM.

Charging supports 11-KW AC, requiring approximately eight hours and 15 minutes from 10% to 100%. Maximum DC charging is 170 KW, allowing a 10% to 80% charge in around 32 minutes. Regenerative-braking output reaches up to 260 KW.

Convenience equipment includes KEYLESS-GO, powered front seats with memory, a panoramic sliding sunroof, head-up display, active ambient lighting and connected vehicle functions through Mercedes me. 

THERMOTRONIC automatic climate control provides dedicated ventilation for rear passengers. The system works with the ENERGIZING comfort functions to coordinate climate, lighting, audio and seat settings. 

AMG Ride Control+ uses AIRMATIC air suspension and adaptive dampers to vary ride height and firmness. Rear-wheel steering of up to 4.5 degrees improves low-speed manoeuvrability and high-speed stability despite the car’s size and weight.

The quiet electric motors and extensive cabin insulation provide strong refinement in Comfort mode. Road noise from the wide 21-inch performance tyres becomes more noticeable on rough surfaces, while AMG Sound Experience can deliberately introduce a more dramatic soundtrack.

The 2023 Mercedes-AMG EQE 53 4MATIC+ combines executive-saloon comfort with extremely strong electric performance. Its 687-PS boost output, adaptive air suspension, rear-wheel steering, powerful brakes and fully variable all-wheel drive make it considerably more capable than the regular EQE.

Its MBUX Hyperscreen, Burmester audio and comprehensive assistance systems also provide a suitably advanced luxury experience. However, the RM649,888 launch price, 2,525-KG weight and 170-KW charging limit make it costly beside newer performance EVs. Its 527-KM range is respectable but considerably shorter than the less powerful EQE 350+.
