The FIFA World Cup always serves as the best spectacle that attracts football fans worldwide. The quadrennial event however always posed astronomical carbon footprints due to fans and teams travelling from across the globe. And suddenly, lowering said carbon output now became the event’s main goal, perhaps bigger than all the goals scored in this competition.

Hyundai Motor, one of 2022 World Cup main sponsors aims to reduce the carbon footprints by introducing its fleet of eco-friendly automobiles – to be used officially throughout this championship. Said fleet of vehicles amounted to 236 units, consisting of multiple EVs and hybrids, including Hyundai’s Elec City electric bus and its flagship EV, the Ioniq 5.

Aligned with the company’s Goal of the Century campaign to champion sustainability globally, this effort is part of FIFA’s aim to make the World Cup to be fully carbon neutral, with this year’s edition being the most carbon-neutral competition to date.

Said hybrids and EVs amount to 50% of total official vehicles used throughout this event. 10 Elec City buses and 226 hybrid and full-electric passenger cars will be used for official transportation, with an addition of multiple EV chargers to be installed at parking facilities around the stadiums.

To prevent further delays and fleet malfunctions, all of said vehicles will be directly monitored by Hyundai at all times. Prompt service responses are on stand-by throughout the event for any emergency cases or vehicle inspections if required.

Personnel handling Hyundai vehicles for this event are trained beginning Oct this year for smooth and safe operations throughout the World Cup.

In conjunction with the World Cup, Hyundai also launched the aforementioned Goal of the Century sustainability campaign. Headlining the said campaign is a group of campaign ambassadors – Team Century – with England legend Steven Gerrard as team captain. Other ambassadors include Korean supergroup BTS and American fashion designer Jeremy Scott.

Aside from Ioniq 5, other Hyundai models featured include the Sonata Hybrid, Tucson Hybrid and KONA Hybrid, as well as Genesis G80 and GV70 EVs – courtesy of Hyundai’s high-end division, Genesis.
