Will The Next-Gen Toyota Supra Go All-Electric?

Rumours online indicate that the sixth-generation Toyota Supra sportscar will undergo a rebirth to become an all-electric sports car. Adding to that, it might head into production soon prior to its market release circa 2026.

As reported by Japan’s Best Car, the current-gen Toyota GR Supra will be retired in 2025, and it will go out with a bang via a GRMN-badged special variant. Additionally, this special could see its 3.0-litre straight-six twin-turbo heart get fettled further to output 542 HP.

Its supposed electric successor, on the other hand, is set to keep the current model's rear-wheel drive (RWD) configuration. But unlike the current car, which shares the same bones as the BMW Z4 roadster, this electric successor could ride on Toyota's e-TNGA architecture instead.

Should the next-gen Supra indeed adopt electrification, then it should stack up against the upcoming all-electric versions of the Porsche Cayman/Boxster midship sportscars that slated for debut in 2026 as well. The switch to new e-TNGA bones could also see the next Supra adopt a midship layout, just like the latter Porsches mentioned..

However, this speculation ought to be taken with a proverbial pinch of salt, more so given Toyota’s adamant beliefs that electrification isn’t the ultimate solution - the firm did showcase experimental hydrogen-powered prototype of its legendary AE86 sports coupe some time back, albeit alongside an EV version too.

Elsewhere within Toyota, its Lexus luxury sub-brand is also reportedly developing a new all-electric halo sports coupe to take on the mantle previously helmed by the Lexus LFA. Previewed through the Electrified Sport concept, the zero-emission supercar will also feature all-wheel-drive (AWD) and brake-by-wire when launched later this decade
