The Malaysian government continues its effort to implement an open toll payment system across nationwide by adding five more highways to provide highway users further options of toll payment charges.

These include several highways like Damansara – Puchong Expressway (LDP), the Western Kuala Lumpur Traffic Dispersal Scheme (SPRINT), the Shah Alam Expressway (KESAS), the SMART Tunnel and the Kuala Lumpur – Putrajaya Expressway (MEX).

According to Public Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, he said the latest five highway concession companies agreed to participate in the implementation of the system which deems to begin mid-September.

He further said the open payment system will be fulfilled in certain phases plus a total of 11 highways which he informed the public last week also involved in said project.

“The decision to implement the open payment system has been reached through various negotiation processes between the Development and Privatization Division of the Ministry of Public Works (KKR) with all stakeholders, including concession companies since 2022.

"Negotiations like this are an ongoing effort by the ministry and need to be held to ensure the implementation of the Multi-Lane Fast Flow (MLFF) system can be successful," he said via his official Facebook page today.

In addition, he also announced the results of the MLFF Proof Of Concept (POC) implementation location has already been decided with the Sungai Besi Highway selected as the first POC location.

"The implementation of this POC will be done at the end of October 2023 to evaluate the MLFF system before it is implemented for all highways in Malaysia.

He also highlighted that aforementioned matter is certainly not easy which requires careful planning and the use of appropriate technology as well as negotiations with various parties before it can be fully implemented.

To ensure that the MLFF transition can be implemented in phases by the third quarter of 2024 at the latest, he concluded by wishing for everyone's cooperation and requesting that they exercise patience by giving KKR team some time.
