image.png According to The Borneo Post, an upgraded traffic rules violation detection camera system with artificial intelligence (AI) has been installed in Miri to capture evidence of traffic offences and provide data for better policy planning and enforcement.
Transport Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin said that the proof-of-concept project at the accident-prone Merbau-Miri-Pujut traffic light intersection will collect data on drivers' attitudes and behaviour and is already showing impressive results within one week of its rollout.
He stated that a repeat offender was caught on camera speeding eight times in a week, demonstrating the project's ability to monitor and detect reckless driving. image.png

"The trial period would be six months," Lee explained, "and the results would be presented to the ministry to decide on the next course of action."

He explained that the data collected would be analysed to gain valuable insight into traffic behaviour, identify high-risk areas, and allow the ministry and enforcement agencies to use data-driven decision-making processes to improve road safety. According to the minister, evading detection would be nearly impossible because the system would collect and record data on traffic flow and volume, vehicle colour, classification, model and brand, travelling speeds, vehicle plate registration number, and automatically detect and record vehicles exceeding the speed limit as well as driver offences.

The data collected would assist agencies in targeting effective enforcement action based on actual situations, particularly misbehaving drivers and accident hotspots.
