The Indonesian-bound Chery Omoda E5 is set to be locally-assembled (CKD) at its local production plant

The Chery Omoda E5 (also known as Omoda 5 EV) is one of the most-anticipated new EV models to enter the local market in near future time, with the first batch of the EV SUV already landed in Malaysia earlier this month. Aside from Malaysia, Chery’s EV SUV model is also bound for the Indonesian market later next year.

Interestingly, Indonesian automotive portal AutonetMagz reported that the Omoda E5 EV will go on sale in Indonesia as a locally-assembled (CKD) model, instead of being fully-imported (CBU) from Chery International’s main production facility in Wuhu, China. This CKD unit will be formally introduced in the neighbouring market later in Feb 2024, in conjunction with the Indonesian International Motor Show (IIMS) next year.

This approach is different from our local market, which will get the CBU unit of the Omoda E5 firsthand. However, Chery Malaysia had expressed a great interest in expanding its CKD operation to not only accommodate the Omoda E5, but also other models under Chery’s sub-brands. The firm’s CKD operation is currently based at Inokom’s production plant in Kulim, Kedah, covering both the Omoda 5 and Tiggo 8 Pro SUVs.

With Chery already poised to locally-assemble the Omoda E5 in Indonesia, there might also be a possibility that we might be getting this EV SUV model imported from Indonesia instead of China, as both Malaysia and Indonesia are right-hand drive markets. However, Chery Malaysia has yet to confirm or deny this matter, but we expect to figure things out as we get closer to its eventual launch date.

Regardless of its origin, the Malaysian-bound Omoda E5 is expected to boast the same specs as the rest of the world. As standard, this EV SUV is powered by a single, front-mounted (FWD) electric motor rated at 221 HP (165 kW), capable of propelling it from nought to 100 KM/H in 7.8 seconds. Juice is provided by a 61-kWh lithium-ion battery mounted in the vehicle floor, which is good enough to grant the Omoda E5 with a maximum WLTP range of 450 KM.
