Tesla Wall Connector ONLY For Tesla Vehicle Charging - Not Other EVs!

What does the Tesla Wall Connector in Malaysia and Apple Lightning port have in common? Apart from both serving the purpose of charging, it would seem both portray a sense of exclusiveness in not following the norm. While this has changed in terms of connector type where for the global market Tesla is now adopting the CCS2 standard while Apple is now on the USB-C, both the brands are still bent on not playing ball with the other industry players.

Case in point a sharing of a WhatsApp conversation between a certified Tesla Wall Connector installer and a customer reveals that the setting on the unit would be set to only charge Tesla vehicles only meaning any other vehicle brands would not be able to juice up on a Tesla Wall Connector that is provided officially by Tesla Malaysia.

Tesla Malaysia had been running a complimentary Tesla Wall Connector campaign which ended on 31 October 2023 for the Model Y and 3 which would come primed with a 7.3-metre cable featuring a Type 2 connector dispensing up to 11.5 kW. It’s also equipped with built-in wi-fi connectivity that enables remote monitoring, as well as firmware updates. On its own, Tesla retails this hardware in Malaysia for RM2,880 sans installation costs.

Now according to the conversation screenshots, the technician further explains that although the owner has access to the Tesla Wall Connector setting and can easily switch the charger to accept other vehicle brands, it would be a breach of Tesla Malaysia’s terms and conditions which would void any warranty claims on the Wall Connector. There was no mention of any vehicle warranty breach which would be the more important of warranties.

This particular clause is clearly stated on page 2 of the Tesla Home Charging Program (HCP), under Other Conditions, point no.3 which reads, “Customers cannot modify any part of the installation or wall connector settings; any unauthorised adjustments will void warranty eligibility.”

In Facebook post on the MyEVOC, netizens are commenting on the possibility of owners just switching back and forth on the Tesla Wall Connector settings if they would like to charge other vehicle brands, however with Tesla's eco-system being extremely well connected to its main system we would assume they would surely have all the record of what and when you have altered their intended setting in their database.

There is also a discussion on why such a clause was not available in Singapore but made available here in Malaysia. According to some, this particular clause is only for those early birds who were eligible to receive the complimentary Tesla Wall Connector and not for those who outright purchased it (Tesla buyers after the 31st October promo). This in order to prevent a secondary charger resale market as the Tesla Wall Connectors are priced attractively even from the get go.

Other vehicle brands are also offering complimentary home chargers such as BYD with Kineta Wallbox. There is also the comment that a chunk of the Tesla buyers are already EV owners and hence, this charging restriction would hurt the brands credibility especially if they were hoping to switch their existing home charger to the slicker (more "branded") Tesla Wall Connector. Plus it surely does not make sense to have two home chargers running at one property, or would it?
