PLUS Malaysia Berhad (PLUS) and Petronas Dagangan Berhad inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to establish Malaysia's first commercial Hybrid Super Station along Malaysia's longest highway network. Initially, the Klang Valley will serve as the pilot location.

In a statement, PLUS announced that the collaboration will result in a pioneering new Petronas station concept. It’s expected to elevate highway services in Malaysia by offering enhanced comfort and diverse options for road users.

Datuk Nik Airina Nik Jaffar, PLUS MD, emphasised that this initiative aligns with the nation’s Low Carbon Mobility Development Blueprint. "These Hybrid Super Stations will not only improve our mobility service facilities but also enrich the highway user experience, promoting sustainable practices throughout their journeys,” says the exec.

Meanwhile, Azrul Osman Rani, MD and CEO of Petronas Dagangan, highlighted that the Hybrid Super Station, covering over 30,000 sq ft, will be meticulously designed to meet evolving customer trends and needs.

The station will feature extensive mobility services, including large-scale petrol and diesel facilities and fast-charging stations for EVs. Additionally, it will also provide enhanced public amenities.

The stations will prioritise sustainability, incorporating energy-efficient building designs, green spaces, and renewable energy sources. Azrul expressed confidence that this collaboration will not only enhance user comfort but also transform the highway travel experience, establishing new landmarks along the highways.

A quick check with Gentari, an independent clean energy solutions entity that has been actively rolling out EV charging stations nationwide and boasts the largest network of DC chargers in Malaysia, revealed that this collaboration is exclusively led by Petronas to replan their station layout and strategy.

We were also informed that once rolled out, these hybrid stations will most likely accept both the Setel and GentariGO applications for refuelling/recharging and points collection.

On a separate note, Gentari had also recently announced that it would be switching to per/kWh charging scheme. This shift will see some of its stations moving away from its previous time-based (per/minute) charging basis. Below are the revised rates for all its DC and AC charging facilities:

  • AC 7kW – RM0.90/kWh
  • AC 11kW/22kW – RM1.05/kWh
  • DC below 30kW – RM1.30/kWh
  • DC above 50kW – RM1.50/kWh
