CATL Unveils Tectrans Commercial Vehicle Battery Series

Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL) has recently unveiled the Tectrans-B battery designed specifically for electric buses, boasting the highest energy density in the bus industry at 175 Wh/kg.

Tectrans-B, which was introduced during an online conference, has a remarkable 1.5 million KM or 15 years of service life. It has the potential to revolutionise commercial vehicle batteries.

Important characteristics of the Tectrans-B battery:

  • Energy Density: 175 Wh/kg, the highest in the industry for bus batteries.
  • Longevity: 15 years or 1.5 million kilometres of service life.
  • Warranty: 1 million KM or 10 years.
  • Durability: With an IP69 waterproof classification, the battery has a 72-hour underwater lifespan.

In addition to securing agreements with 13 significant clients, like Dongfeng, Golden Dragon, and Yutong Bus, CATL intends to implement the Tectrans-B battery across 80 distinct bus models. Although no additional information was given during the introduction, the battery's mass production is scheduled to start shortly.

The Tectrans battery which CATL previously marketed under the brand name "Tianxing," was introduced on July 4, specifically for EV batteries for commercial vehicles.

The first product launched under this brand was the Tectrans-L battery, dedicated to light commercial vehicles, featuring:

  • Energy Density: 200 Wh/kg
  • Capacity: 200 kWh
  • Charging: 4C fast charging, enabling 60% state of charge (SoC) in just 12 minutes.
  • Warranty: 8 years or 800,000 KM.

Furthermore, CATL now powers over 385,000 buses worldwide and owns over 50% of the EV battery market in China this year. In addition to the Tectrans-B and Tectrans-L battery, CATL also unveiled the two-version Tectrans-T battery designed for heavy-duty vehicles:

Tectrans-T Long Life Edition:

Tectrans-T Superfast Charging Edition:

  • Charging: 4C fast charging, refilling 70% SoC in 15 minutes.
  • Capacity: 200–600 kWh.
  • Range: Up to 500 km.
  • Lifespan: 1.2 million KM or 8 years.

By implementing these advances, CATL hopes to maintain its leadership position in the EV battery market and further push the limits of energy storage for electric commercial vehicles alongside its advancement in the passenger vehicle space.
