Compliance among motor vehicles with the emission regulation has risen to 94%, the Department of Environment revealed.

The Malaysian Department of Environment (JAS) revealed that compliance among motor vehicles with the Environmental Quality Act (AKAS) 1974 has risen to 94% so far this year. As reported by Bernama, this increase in emission-compliant vehicles in Malaysia has brought the number closer to JAS’ target of 95% compliance.

According to the department’s operations deputy director-general, Dr. Norhazni Mat Sari, this compliance increase was mostly due to the use of cleaner fuels such as Euro 5 diesel, improvements in vehicle engine range, and regular vehicle maintenance.

The deputy director-general further added that during their recent Ops Gerak Kebangsaan, a total of 9,269 vehicles were checked nationwide, with only 567 found in violation of the emission regulations.

“This means only 6% of vehicles failed to comply, breaching six rules on diesel and petrol smoke emissions, including exceeding smoke reading tests,” she said at the closing of the Ops Gerak Kebangsaan held at the Mambau R&R yesterday.

Norhazni added that while achieving 100% compliance in the near term is challenging, reaching almost 95% is considered realistic and commendable. As for the operation itself, she said it reflects JAS’ comprehensive approach to enforcing environmental laws, covering smoke and gas emissions, motorcycle noise levels, fuel content, and refrigerant management.

During this recent operation, all state JAS offices participated, working in collaboration with enforcement agencies including the Road Transport Department (JPJ), Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK), and many more.
