Chevrolet’s New Corvette Z06, A High-Performing 8,600 Rpm Redline Capable Beast

Revving with plenty of mechanical, aerodynamic and styling upgrades, Chevrolet presents the high-performance and track-focused 2023 Corvette Z06.
Initially, this latest version of the Corvette Z06 made a teaser appearance two years ago, but only recently, Chevy gave this mid-engine sports car its official unveiling.

Sprinting right off the starting line, at the heart of the beast is the LT6, a naturally aspirated 5.5-litre DOHC V8 engine.
It features an aluminium cylinder block, titanium and sodium-filled valves, forged aluminium pistons and titanium connecting rods.

In addition to that, it also has a dry sump, flat-plane crankshaft, twin 87 mm throttle bodies and four-into-two-into-one stainless steel exhaust headers.
The engine is mated to an 8-speed dual-clutch gearbox with a shorter 5.56 final drive ratio and an electronically controlled limited-slip differential.

Transmitting all power to the rear wheels, said setup has an output of 670 hp at 8,400 rpm and 623 Nm of torque at 6,300 rpm, with capabilities of an 8,600 rpm redline.
Acceleration-wise, the Z06 can dash from 0 to 96 km/h in 2.7 seconds or 2.6 seconds with the optional Z07 Performance Package.

Whereas, for a standard Z06 sporting the Z51 Performance Package, it takes 2.9 seconds to complete the century sprint.
According to Chevrolet, this powertrain unit is derived from the Corvette C8.R racer and is the most powerful engine ever fitted to any production car.

Apart from the new ticker, the C8.R racer also mused the Z06’s improved handling prowess, where it sports a wider 9.4 cm stance compared to the Chevy Stingray.
For instance, this is to make room for the massive 345/25 profile Michelin Pilot Sport 4S rear tyres and to allow for more airflow through the side air vents.

Speaking of which, the Z06 gets the largest rims ever used on a production Corvette, with 20-inch units at the front wrapped in 275/30 profile tyres, while 21-inches occupy the rear.
This is necessary to fit a larger Brembo braking system that has 370 mm rotors with six-piston callipers at the front and 380 mm rotors with four-piston callipers at the back.

Then, the front end also adorns new and larger intakes to draw clean air into a centre heat exchanger as well as to better cool the brakes and transaxle.
Besides that, the engineers have also changed the tuning of the steering and magnetorheological dampers (Magnetic Ride Control 4.0) to be specific to the Z06.

Notably, the aerodynamic elements include a front splitter and a unique rear spoiler, where the latter features a wickerbill that can be installed for an extra 165.6 kg of downforce at 299 km/h.
Plus, adding on the carbon-fibre aerodynamic package, it sees lightweight materials joined by the front dive planes, a pedestal-mounted rear wing and underbody aero strakes.

That’s not all, the optional Z07 Performance Package also comes standard with the carbon-fibre aerodynamic package, which fits on a few more upgrades to the performance.
E.g., the FE7 suspension with additional Magnetic Ride Control 4.0 calibrations, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tyres and carbon-ceramic 398 mm front and 398 mm rear brake rotors.

Thus, with this complete package fitted, the Z06 generates 333 kg of downforce at 299 km/h and can pull 1.22 g on a 91-metre skid pad.
Moreover, Chevrolet also offers carbon-fibre wheels that reduce unsprung mass by 18.6 kg, but only if the Z07 Performance Package is specified.

Last but not least, other options to enhance the overall aesthetics include two carbon-fibre interior trim packages, a leather interior package, a carbon-fibre steering wheel and six-seat belt options.
As if that’s not enough, extending that list are twelve exterior colours, seven interior colours, three sear hue choices, six brake calliper colours and seven standard wheel designs.

All in all, the new Chevrolet Corvette Z06 can be owned in either the coupe or hardtop convertible bodies and is built for both the left- and right-hand drive markets.
