Maserati Enters 2023 Formula E with New Tipo Folgore Gen3 Racer

The ABB FIA Formula E championship is a great platform for automakers to flaunt some of their best EV performance technologies, while serving as an effective marketing tool. From Porsche to Jaguar, the 2023 Formula E championship is about to get more exciting as yet another contestant from a well-renowned performance marque.

Famed Italian sportscar brand Maserati is poised to make its Formula E debut in the 2023 season, with its Gen3 racer – the Tipo Folgore – recently unveiled to the world. Racing under the name of Maserati MSG Racing in the ninth season of Formula E, this revelation also ends Maserati’s six-decade absence in any single-seater racing series, with its last entrant as a factory team being the 1956 Formula 1 championship.

Unveiled on the streets of Modena, Italy, the Maserati Tipo Folgore is named after the marque’s first-ever racing car, the Tipo 26, which debuted in 1926 at the Targa Florio endurance race. Aside from the naming convention, the Tipo Folgore also took design cues from its racing predecessor, featuring the Trident’s iconic racing blue livery.

The blue-draped Tipo Folgore boasts similar triangular design as the rest of Formula E Gen3 racers, as required by regulations. The contrasting aquamarine hue is being matched with carbon black, as well as some white stripe decals around the car. Adding some colour pop to this blue-black racer are the rainbow decal on its front wing and the signature Maserati Corse logo with Italian Tricolore stripes on its side pods.

As the fastest and most efficient Formula E car yet, the Gen3 Tipo Folgore comes with front and rear powertrains that deliver up to 600 kW (804 HP) of regenerative power, thus allowing up to 95% power efficiency.  Plus, about 40% of the car’s energy usage comes from regenerative braking alone, while bulk of its power comes from the rear powertrain that produces up to 350 kW (470 HP) of power.

As the first Italian marque to enter the Formula E championship, Maserati hopes to leverage on the track expertise as well as technological advancements of Formula E in order to bring real-life improvements on its growing EV line-up. To date, Maserati has only launched one full-EV model, the GranTurismo Folgore, with few more being planned for release in years’ time.

Ahead of its Formula E debut, the Maserati Tipo Folgore will undergo a series of pre-season testing in Valencia, Spain. The 2023 ABB FIA Formula E championship will kick-start its 17-race calendar at the upcoming 2023 Mexico City ePrix, happening at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez circuit on Jan 14, 2023.
