Chery Solid State Battery Coming In 2026 With 1,500 KM Range

Chery Auto announced during the recent 2024 Chery International User Summit that it would launch its all-solid-state battery in 2026 under its new Kunpeng battery brand. Initially, the tech will be offered in three battery series, all capable of ultra-fast 6C charging - adding 400 KM of range in just 5 minutes.
Chery outlined an ambitious roadmap for its solid-state batteries, aiming for an energy density of 400 Wh/kg by the end of this year and increasing to 600 Wh/kg by 2025. The first EV featuring this cutting-edge battery is expected to be introduced in 2026, followed by batch production in 2027.

According to Chery, these solid-state batteries will provide a range of up to 1,500 KM, a game-changer when it comes to EV range and performance.
Furthermore, the group has also announced three battery series under the Kunpeng brand: square lithium iron phosphate, square ternary, and large cylindrical ternary batteries, all designed for fast charging at up to 6C.

"C", in this context, denotes the charging multiplier rate. It also signals that these batteries can be charged or discharged much faster than conventional ones.
Square lithium iron phosphate batteries - with an energy density of 120-160 Wh/kg, are intended for EVs with a range of 200-600 km, as well as plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs) with an all-electric range of 100-200 KM. They support 1C-6C charging and can operate in temperatures between -30°C and 65°C.

Square ternary batteries - designed for EVs with a range of 600-800 KM and PHEVs or EREVs with all-electric ranges of 150-300 km. Their energy density is between 140-200 Wh/kg, and they can function in temperatures from -40°C to 65°C, supporting 2C-6C charging.

Large cylindrical ternary batteries - aimed at EVs with ranges of 700-1200 KM and PHEVs or EREVs with all-electric ranges of 150-300 KM, also support 2C-6C charging.
The Kunpeng battery series is designed to handle more than 3,000 charging cycles and features multi-section energy-absorbing technology that allows for rapid pressure relief in under one second. Chery also demonstrated the durability of its batteries, showing that a cell with a cut corner could still function.

Chery plans to introduce the Kunpeng batteries into its new energy vehicles (NEVs) soon. As of Sept, the company had sold over 60,000 NEVs and Chairman Yin Tongyue expects NEV sales to reach 80,000 in Oct and 100,000 by the year's end.
It's worth noting that SAIC General Motors recently announced the development of 6C batteries as well, which are expected to hit the market in 2025. Additionally, both Chery and SAIC are not members of the China All-Solid-State Battery Collaborative Innovation Platform (CASIP) which was formed to accelerate the development of solid state batteries.
