Zafrul: MITI Will Assist Perodua To Produce EV Under RM100K

The Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) is set to assist Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd (Perodua) in producing Malaysia's first electric vehicle (EV) priced below RM100,000.
This was shared by MITI Minister, Tengku Zafrul during the launch of the JAC T9 Diesel and EV Pick-Up Truck, while expressing optimism that Perodua would achieve its goal of launching the EV by the end of 2025. In fact, Zafrul further noted that Perodua had been in discussions with MITI, and they are confident about meeting the production timeline.

Perodua had recently showcased the emo-1 EV Concept, a working prototype which was based on the Myvi at the MAS2024 co-developed with the assistance of an unnamed Australian partner.
Additionally, Zafrul continued highlighting the growing demand for EV adoption in Malaysia. As of September 2024, nearly 16,000 new EVs were registered, surpassing 2023’s annual volume of approximately 13,000 EVs. He further noted that these positive uptake aligns with Malaysia's goal of having EVs make up 20% of the total industry volume by 2030.

He went on to add that In just three months, 565 new chargers were installed, bringing the total number of public charging stations to nearly 3,200 by the end of September in line with MITI’s goal of having 10,000 EVCBs by the end of 2025; charger-to-EV ratio of 1:9.
Furthermore, the automotive industry remains a key pillar of Malaysia’s economy, contributing about 4% to the national GDP annually and is in-line to capture a significant share of the ASEAN EV market - expected to reach RM11.6 billion by 2027.
