The Melaka state government has revised its EV charging station plans, lowering its target from 350 chargers by 2025 to 300 within the next two years. Announced by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh, the updated goal focuses on placing chargers in strategic locations like tourist hubs to maximize usage and impact.

Currently, the state has 132 EV chargers, a modest increase from 118 recorded in February when the initial goal was set. Ab Rauf emphasized the importance of private-sector collaboration in expanding this infrastructure to meet the revised targets and support broader green technology initiatives.

This revised strategy still aligns with Melaka’s ambition to position itself as a hub for EV and energy-efficient vehicle (EEV) assembly, even as nationwide EV infrastructure rollouts remain slow. It also complements the Melaka Green Development Plan, which prioritizes low-carbon technology and sustainable growth.

Ab Rauf announced this during the recent launch of EPMB Group’s 1,000th vehicle delivery - the recently launched GWM Haval H6 HEV. He also acknowledged Honda Malaysia’s long-standing assembly operations and EPMB as a contract assembly hub and key components supplier to major brands like Toyota, Proton, Mazda and GWM.

This diversification aligns with global trends toward sustainable vehicles and has significantly contributed to Melaka’s economic growth. He also highlighted the long-term potential of the automotive downstream industry which includes job creation for the younger generation.

These developments underscore the state government’s commitment to building a strong green automotive sector through targeted incentives and industry collaboration.
