More Than Half of Toyota GR Supras Sold in the US in 2024 Were Manuals

Toyota has sold more GR Supra manuals than their automatic counterparts in 2024, at least in the US market.
Since its original introduction back in 2019, the Toyota GR Supra (A90) has been marred with numerous controversies, including the automaker’s decision to strictly offer it with an automatic transmission. However, Toyota has dialed back its decision by introducing a manual-transmission version of the sportscar back in 2023, thus bringing the German-boned GR Supra closer to its legendary predecessor, the A80-gen Supra.

And it seems like Toyota’s decision proved to be fruitful, as the automaker managed to sell more manual versions of the new Supras than their AT counterparts, at least in the US market. According to Toyota USA, 65% of the GR Supra’s sales in 2024 were manuals, as opposed to 43% in the previous year.
While the 65% figure may seem impressive, this only amounts to 1,700 units, as Toyota USA managed to ship a total of 2,615 GR Supras last year. For reference, the automaker’s daily sales output averages at about 6,391 units per day, which by itself is pretty mind-boggling.

It is no secret that the Americans have a high affinity towards manual-transmission sportscars, which has largely contributed to the increase of GR Supra MT sales in the State. Another contributing factor is Toyota USA’s decision to stop the production of the more affordable four-cylinder variant of the GR Supra, which comes strictly with an automatic transmission.

Despite this surge in popularity, the GR Supra MT is still far from being Toyota’s best-selling manual sportscar in the US, as that title still goes to the manual GR86, with 6,056 out of the total 11,426 units, or 53% of the GR86 sold last year, being the manual variant.

Europe-only Toyota GR Supra Final Edition
Aptly, we’d reckon Toyota USA ought to celebrate the success of the GR Supra manual, as the sun is about to set for the A90 generation model, given the fact that the production of its Bavarian twin, the BMW Z4, is set to end this year. In Europe, Toyota has already launched a Final Edition version of the GR Supra as a swansong, featuring more power, beefier suspensions, and coming exclusively in manual transmission. America next?
