Govt Revises Sept AFA Rebate, Now Lower at 1.10 sen/kWh

Malaysia’s monthly electricity tariff adjustment has once again shifted in favour of consumers. The Automatic Fuel Adjustment (AFA) rate for Sept has been set at 1.10 sen per kWh, slightly lower than the earlier estimate of 1.23 sen.

The AFA, which kicked in this July, updates tariffs every month to mirror real market conditions. Unlike the old ICPT system that locked prices for half a year, AFA responds directly to changes in fuel prices and exchange rates, ensuring bills are based on actual cost trends rather than projections.

For electric vehicle (EV) drivers, the impact is immediate. Take the BYD Atto 2 with its 51 kWh battery: charging it five times in a month uses roughly 255 kWh of electricity. Under the September rebate, that equates to a saving of about RM2.81

While modest, it demonstrates how even small adjustments can make a difference over time, especially for households where EV charging forms a large share of electricity use.

The latest revision also highlights how provisional figures are only a guide. Oct’s rebate, once expected at 2.65 sen per kWh, has now been revised to 2.31 sen, while Nov’s figure has been brought down from 1.95 sen to 1.06 sen.

The trend underlines that TNB will only confirm the actual adjustment each month after reviewing global fuel costs and currency movements.

Alongside AFA, Malaysia’s wider tariff reforms under Regulatory Period 4 (RP4) continue to reshape billing. Itemised charges now separate energy, capacity, network, and retail components, giving consumers a clearer picture of where costs come from.

For EV owners in particular, these monthly shifts make it worth paying closer attention to charging habits. Options such as Time-of-Use tariffs, smart charging setups, or even rooftop solar could help stretch the benefits of these rebates further as energy pricing grows more dynamic.
