VW ID.Cross Concept Previews Brand’s Future Affordable EV SUV

The all-new Volkswagen ID.Cross Concept previews the marque's future affordable subcompact EV SUV.
Besides the new ID.Polo, Volkswagen has also unveiled an entirely new concept model at this year’s IAA Mobility show (Munich Motor Show), known as the VW ID.Cross Concept. This new concept previews the marque’s future EV SUV, possibly the all-electric version of the T-Roc subcompact crossover.
Similar to the ID.Polo, the new ID.Cross concept is also part of VW’s new small EV product family, underpinning a new front-wheel drive (FWD) version of the MEB platform.

Design-wise, the ID.Cross gets the same compact SUV crossover bodystyle as the new T-Roc, albeit featuring more reserved and minimalistic design cues. Key highlights include slim LED headlights that combine with the full-width LED DRL, illuminated VW emblems on both ends, blacked-out C-pillars, flared wheel arches with prominent plastic underbody cladding, and many more.

Rounding off the design cues for the ID.Cross are the 21-inch alloy wheels wrapped in bespoke Continental tyres that integrate the spoke pattern into their sidewall. Given its relatively large size and intricate design, we’d reckon this rolling stock won’t make it to the production version.

Despite using the same platform as the ID.Polo, the new ID.Cross is noticeably larger than its hatch sibling, measuring 4,161 mm long, 1,839 mm wide, and 1,588 mm tall with a 2,601 mm wheelbase.

Onboard, the new ID.Cross concept gets the same minimalist cabin setup seen on the ID.2all concept, with the crown jewel being its large 13-inch floating infotainment screen at the centre, accompanied by a smaller 11-inch digital metre cluster.

Also present here is the new two-spoke steering wheel that now features physical buttons instead of the finicky touch-sensitive ones seen on previous VW models, plus a floating central console that houses the wireless charger and a small iDrive-style rotary controller for the infotainment.

Playing around with the relaxation theme, VW has elected to use the calming Vanilla Chai beige colourway for the ID.Cross’ cabin, while both the front and rear seats can be folded completely flat, which transforms the SUV into a mobile camper. Speaking of camping, you’ll be happy to know that the concept’s 490-litre boot space and a small 25-litre frunk are here to carry your camping goods and equipment.

In terms of battery and powertrain, VW has confirmed that the ID.Cross will get two battery options, with the larger unit capable of providing up to 420 km of WLTP range. That said, only one powertrain option will be available, namely the single FWD motor setup rated at 208 hp (155 kW), with no dual-motor AWD options confirmed for now.

Fortunately, VW fans won’t be waiting too long before seeing this concept come into fruition, as the automaker says the production version of the ID.Cross will arrive in the summer of 2026. In Europe, the ID.Cross will compete against other subcompact EV SUVs like the Volvo EX30, Kia EV2, Toyota Urban Cruiser, and many more.
