Despite the Frontier badge being absent in Malaysia, its presence in China has just taken a major step forward. Zhengzhou Nissan recently launched the Frontier Pro series pickup, with prices ranging from RMB169,900 (RM99,800) to RMB249,900 (RM146,000).
This new generation Frontier Pro marks a milestone for Nissan. It is the first product entirely designed, developed, and produced in China, with plans to sell it globally. Zhengzhou Nissan also serves as Nissan’s first full vehicle manufacturing joint venture in the country and houses the brand’s LCV R&D centre.

The Frontier Pro stands out on the road with its commanding dimensions: 5,520 MM long, 1,960 MM wide, 1,950 MM tall, and a 3,300 MM wheelbase. The cargo bed is spacious, measuring 1,520 MM in length, 1,600 MM in width, and 490 MM in depth. Select models also feature an electric soft-down tailgate for added convenience.

Design differs between the fuel and PHEV variants. Fuel models keep Nissan’s classic V-Motion styling, refreshed for modern appeal. The PHEV takes a more electrified and tech-forward approach, reflecting the trends of today’s EV market.

Inside, the cabin blends practicality with technology. A digital instrument cluster and large central screen dominate the dashboard, while a row of physical buttons remains on the centre console for ease of use. Premium touches include soft-touch materials and a 12-speaker JLA audio system, creating a comfortable, high-quality interior experience.
Under the hood, the Frontier Pro offers multiple powertrain options. Fuel models come with either a 2.0T gasoline engine delivering 258 hp and 400 Nm, or a 2.3T diesel producing 190 hp and 500 Nm, both paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission.

The PHEV combines a 1.5T engine with a front-mounted electric motor for a combined output of 320 kW (429 HP) and 800 Nm, paired with a 4-speed DHT transmission. It also offers a pure electric range of 135 KM under CLTC conditions.
With the launch of the Frontier Pro, Nissan is positioning itself as a serious player in China’s pickup market while signalling broader global ambitions for its China-designed vehicles. The million-ringgit question now is: will Malaysia be part of that plan? Only time will tell.
