No Extra Cost, But Check Your Filter? 4 Essential Things Every Diesel Driver Needs To Know About The B15 Rollout

If you were completely checked out of the news over the long four-day holiday, you definitely weren't alone. But while we were all busy relaxing, a major national energy policy quietly went into effect across petrol stations in Peninsular Malaysia on June 1.

Malaysia has officially upgraded its standard biodiesel blend from B10 to B15. If you drive a pick-up truck, a family SUV, or operate a commercial vehicle, this directly affects what is going into your fuel tank right now.

Here are the 4 absolute essential things you need to know before your next trip to the pump:

1. What exactly is B15 (and will it cost me more)?

According to an official report by NST, this transition is a strategic national move designed to reduce Malaysia's dependency on imported diesel, support local palm oil smallholders, and lower greenhouse gas emissions. Thankfully, you aren't going to see a price hike at the pump because of this change.

The Mix: B15 biodiesel simply means that every litre of diesel you pump now contains 15% palm-based biodiesel (palm methyl ester) and 85% conventional petroleum diesel. Previously under B10, it was a 10% palm oil mix.

The Price: The upgrade replaces the existing B10 blend at absolutely no additional cost to the end user.

The Macro Impact: Raising domestic usage to B15 is expected to boost annual local biodiesel usage to 801,000 tonnes, providing a stable local market for crude palm oil (CPO). Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi stated that this shift could save Malaysia about RM1.5 billion annually in fuel subsidies.

2. Most modern diesel vehicles are completely safe

If your diesel vehicle is relatively new, you can breathe a massive sigh of relief. Government officials have confirmed that modern diesel engines are fully compatible with B15, following rigorous testing of higher blends in areas like Langkawi, Labuan, and Sarawak without major engine issues.

Official verification from major automotive manufacturers compiled by Paul Tan confirms that the following modern lineups handle B15 completely fine with zero modifications needed and zero impact on your warranty:

  • Isuzu: All D-Max variants starting from 2020 are already adapted to handle up to B20, fully covering every vehicle currently under manufacturer warranty.
  • Ford: All current-generation Ford Ranger and Everest models with 2.0L (single and bi-turbo) diesel engines are fully B20-compliant from the factory with warranties fully intact.
  • Toyota: While UMW Toyota did not officially respond to queries, technical data establishes that the GD-series engines (2.4L and 2.8L) found on current Hilux and Fortuner lineups handle B15 perfectly without modifications.
  • Mitsubishi: The brand new sixth-generation Triton (featuring the 4N16 2.4L turbodiesel engine) can run B20 with absolutely no impact on your warranty.
  • Hyundai & Kia: Both brands confirmed that their modern oil burners (such as the Staria, Palisade, and Carnival) are technically compatible all the way up to B30, though they still recommend Euro 5 B7 for optimum performance.

3. If you drive these specific older models, you need to be careful

Paul Tan also reported that while newer models are completely in the clear, the situation changes for older generation workhorses. If you own one of these, you might need to schedule a quick trip to the service center or adjust your fuel habits:

  • Older Ford Rangers (2.2L and 3.2L Duratorq): These older generations were originally certified for up to B10 only. To safely run B20 or B15 without risking fuel system clogging or dropped performance, they must be retrofitted with an upgraded genuine Ford fuel filter system. Because these vehicles are past their standard warranty period, Ford will not cover B20-related issues.
  • Previous-Gen Mitsubishi Tritons (5th Gen 4N15 2.4L): The official recommendation for this specific engine is to use B7 fuel, as the owner's manual does not recommend B20. However, regional data from Thailand suggests the engine can handle it, provided owners commit to more frequent fuel filter changes.
  • Older Hilux Models (Pre-2015): While 2015-onwards Hilux models are cleared for higher blends, owners of models built before 2015 should definitely consult an authorized dealer or stick to B7 diesel to play it safe.

4. There is a strict warning for Mazda Skyactiv-D owners

If you drive a diesel-powered passenger car, you need to look very closely at your engine badge.

Official advisories provided to Paul Tan confirm that for Mazda models equipped with the Skyactiv-D engine (such as the CX-5 and CX-8), the use of higher biodiesel blends like B15 or B20 is not advisable. Their official owner’s manuals specify that only B7 diesel is permitted. Pumping higher palm-oil fuel blends into a Skyactiv-D engine could negatively affect engine performance and completely void your factory warranty coverage.

Additionally, for Mazda BT-50 owners, while the truck can operate on higher blends (as it utilizes Isuzu-sourced engines), the physical nature of the fuel means drivers might notice slightly reduced acceleration and an earlier illumination of the fuel filter warning light.

For 90% of diesel drivers on the road today, this change is completely invisible and won't affect your daily drive or your wallet. However, if you are driving a diesel Mazda passenger car or an older generation work truck, it is highly recommended to double-check your owner's manual or visit your fuel station's premium pump to stick to Euro 5 B7 fuel.
